SlingerLeedy in black sparkle?

From slingerfan

Here are two versions of Black Sparkle (click on pictures to enlarge). http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_4_finishes15.htm# The first version is most likely.

With the drum being from Leedy, you’re correct, of course.

Thanks very much for the input and for that link.

Not sure how helpful this’ll be but just to keep things moving, here’s a pic of the drum from the only gig I’ve used it on.

Now off to the studio to wrestle with stacks of BD cases.

More pics forthcoming.

DrumBob, thanks very much for hipping me on how to post pics.

Nicely done! That’s exactly it. Identical to Slingerland’s from the same time, needless to say. The toms in that pic are Slingerlands from October of ‘64.

I have Slingerland 22, 12, 13, 2 16’s, and a Solid Shell Artist snare drum, all in that same wrap, along with that SlingerLeedy 20.

Look at the color chart that slingerfan posted. Your drum should be one or the other of those two wraps.

You're welcome. Black Sparkle is pretty rare on Leedy drums, as far as I know. There were not a lot of Leedy drums made in the first place. Slingerland hoped to use it as a second line. If you had a Slingerland dealer in a town, and a second music store opened up, they couldn't have Slingerland, but they could have Leedy. I know this all too well.

When I started taking lessons, I was enrolled in a glitzy music school in town. My father negotiated a price on a Slingerland set, but when they arrived, they were Leedy. My mother and I brought them home, and then my father came home from work, saw they weren't Slingerland, and demanded our money back. Of course, I had to return the drums next day. I was crushed, as you can imagine. We then drove down the street and around the corner and I started lessons with the teacher/dealer who had the Slingerland line. I finally got my Slingerland set six months later.

The northwest Indiana suburb of Chicago where I grew up had at least a half dozen music stores. The neighboring towns on both sides of the Indiana/Illinois state line had at least another half dozen music stores. The major music stores and drum shops in Chicago were about ten miles from where I lived. I never saw any Leedy drums in any of those shops. Every music store had one or more of the following brands...Slingerland, Ludwig, Rogers, Gretsch, Camco, and even WFL in the 1950s. This is odd because Leedy was made for many decades in Indianapolis--a couple hours south of where I was raised. Leedy was then made in the C.G. Conn factory--that Elkhart, Indiana factory was 50 miles east of my house. Then, Leedy drums were made in Slingerland's Chicago factory--about ten miles west of where I lived. It was not until the late 1990s that I became aware that the Leedy drums from the 1950s and 1960s were my favorite Slingerland drums with those beautiful Leedy lugs. Since then, Leedy has become my co-favorite vintage drums with Slingerland.
