Slingerland Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

So, having been a Ludwig guy for a long time, but always looking for a rock setup with a 24" bass drum, I came across a slingerland set. 24-13-14-16-18. Niles Badge, thicker shells, no rerings, possibly late 70s in black chrome wrap.

What are your thoughts on these? I like the 6-ply Ludwig shells for their power. Are those comparable?!

I'll attach a picture of the set...

Looks like an extra tom mount on the BD.. and you have a wrap issue on the 18"...

Cheers

John is correct the 5 ply slingerlands will sound very close to the ludwig 6 ply shells.

Thanks guys. Yes I saw the extra mount. And asked the seller about it. Can't see it on the other photos the seller posted.

John: what do you mean with wrap issue?

Looks like another incomplete Avante set or perhaps a set that's been pieced together. I would make sure they are all 5 ply shells. The Avante set appears in the 1978 catalog and has 5 ply shells as an option. Despite what some may say about Slingerland 5 ply shells, (not yet in this thread) they are very nice. The shells on my '81 Magnum drums are absolutely beautiful and sound great.

1981 Slingerland Magnum 8pc Pewter Silk
1971 Slingerland Avante 60N Lavender Satin Flame
1976/7 Ludwig Vistalite 5pc Yellow
1980's Ludwig Rocker 5pc Black
2004 Gretsch Catalina Birch Caribbean Blue
1998 Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic 14X4.75

Could be a reflection. The Black chrome wrap was actual plated steel so to have a chunk like that ripped off the drum would take considerable effort both to pull off the adhesive and to rip it apart from the surrounding steel. I suppose anything's possible though.

In the picture they look more like they could be regular black wrap (plastic) but it's hard to say for sure from a photo.

As I recall Slingerland brought out the 5 ply shell first and Ludwig had to play catch-up by introducing their 6 ply shell (which is one ply "better" right?) shortly thereafter. Both shells owe their design to Gretsch which had adopted that sort of shell construction much earlier.

Looks like a Avante set. Are you sure what you think is a 16" is not a 15" tom. It goes in the other bass drum tom mount on a single setomatic tom holder. I have the same set except mine are three ply with re rings. Mine are 24" 18" 15" 14" 13".
