Slingerland uncatalogued snare drum? Last viewed: 46 minutes ago

Loading...

I've had this wonderful 60's 10-lug COB snare drum sitting in a box and finally took it out today for some pictures in the nice sunshine! Purchased it from a friend of mine a few years ago. All original, except for heads and wires. Has all the original square-head tension rods, too. The shell, while very clean, has superficial scratches and the original owner put some type of number on the top hoop.

From first glance, it appears to be a #132 10-lug Gene Krupa Sound King snare drum. Then, you notice that it has a factory installed Rapid strainer with matching butt, when it should have a Zoomatic and Leedy butt. I've seen maybe 2 of these on eBay over the years.

So, what is it? An uncatalogued snare drum? Custom order? Or, possibly just mistakenly drilled for the Rapid strainer and butt?

Still, it's a wonderful sounding drum, with the simplicity of the Rapid strainer. I had a friend of mine thread the drop gate and install a clamping bar so I can use tape for the snare wires. Don't worry, I still have the original unmolested drop gate!

It's a brass 10 lug ( also had 8 lug ) Festival Model drum . The Festival was always shown in the catalogs with the smooth shell and in the 60's/70's were steel . I've read that there are a bunch of Festival drums out there with the 3 line shells, which are always brass. Lucky find !

Did you read my post ? Apparently ( according to what I've read in the past ) Slingerland made some brass / 3 groove Festivals . I forget where I read that but it was from a vintage drum " expert " .

This was always my thought...EXCEPT...the brass shell Festival, and all Festivals for that matter, used a flanged-over edge. The GK Sound King from this period makes use of a full round-over edge, which certainly differentiated it from the Festival.

As to brass-shell Festivals having 3 etched lines, I've not heard of this, but anything is possible when it came to the way Slingerland did business! And, based on that alone, it's very possible that my drum was originally to be a Sound King, but somehow became a #138 Festival...with round-over edges!
