I just picked up an 8x12 Slingerland tom with a Niles badge. It was missing a lug which I put replaced, changed the heads and tuned up. When I went to mount it (rail mount with L arm) the badge faces left but the muffler dial is facing forward (audience side). I could understand this in a 13", as it may have been part of a two-tom setup and would be on the right. But not on a 12"...unless it was originally part of a left handed kit. Anybody seen this before? Thanks for any thoughts.

It was common to have the same size toms meaning (2) 8x12" toms. the modern solo kit was one here http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/slingerland_drum_sets/1963A-slingerland2.jpg
During the late 50's through the late 60's it was very common for drum sets to have two 8x12 toms. I have owned several of them. I bought some of them new in the 60's and some on the vintage market in recent years. I have also owned and played sets with two 9x13 toms. Here is a vintage Walberg and Auge set that I recently acquired. It has two 9x13 toms, and the badges both face forward with muffler knobs on the drummer's side.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, and for solving the mystery. The tom on the drummer's right in the Modern Solo Kit is what I've got for the left as a single tom. Maybe I'll mount it on a stand to the left to get things going in the right direction. In any case, I'll ask more questions next time! Thanks again.

Yes, that tom could have definitely been part of a Modern Solo or a Duet (twin bass with dual 12" toms mounted on a floor stand) outfit. I purchased a 4pc Slingerland kit that had been part of the Duet outfit. The included 12" tom was drilled as the right-hand tom, with the original left-hand tom shell being sold separately. Mounted to my left, the tone control knob faced about the ten o'clock position. I ended up also purchasing the left-hand shell and moving all the hardware to it. This way, the tone control knob would be at the 7-8 o'clock position. I just wanted the tom to look "normal" when set up with the 4pc kit. Hope this info helps!
