Slingerland TDR snare (Model 190)

Hey there,

I have a question regarding Slingerland’s Model 190 wood tdr snare. Were these nice sounding snares? I know they were 5 ply, m-p-m-p-m or mah? Was this rogers dyna and fibes cof rival?

Were the bearing edges 45 degree? How about the snare beds?

There is not much info other than referred as the BR snare which he used only for a short time.

Any owner or anyone who have played one have some input?

I am between one of these snares, a new Dyna, Gretsch USA custom 5 x 14 w/ the microsensitive strainer 10 lug, or wait until Tommy starts Fibes production again (which he stated will be soon) and order a new 5 x 14 wood fibes w/ the SFT system.

I’ve been using a 12lug spitfire model five ply tdr for over 35 years as my main snare. It is a fantastic drum that Jim Rupp from Columbus Pro Percussion compares favorably with his Radio Kings. The drum does have 45 degree edges. The drums use snare wires that extend past the bearing edge edges. Mine is very crisp sounding but warm. It has rich overtones butthe internal muffler allows for a lot of control. The strainer works perfectly and the snares dont loosen while playing. Right now I have a Kentville medium kangaroo hide head which accentuates the warmth while still being very sensitive. I highly recommend thse drums.

I am looking at a 10 lug, I have a RK and a Hollywood ace, as well as a Rogers PT wood, and a Corder 8x14 w/ the SFT, Ludwig symphonic. All great snares , but I like the TDR system and was curious about the 190.

I imagine hey are pretty similar. The extra lugs just means a little less tension on each lug to achieve the same overall head tension.
