Slingerland Stumper

Here's a kit that absolutely stumped me. I went to a pawn shop today and found the following:

All three toms are stamped 1965 or 1966

Did not look at the bass for a stamp.

22x14 bass

10x7 tom

12x8 tom

14x14 floor

What the heck? I don't recall ever seeing a Slingerland 10 inch tom from 65 or 66. Can anyone shed some light on this? It's a double head set up and not a concert tom. I plan on checking in on Monday to maybe pick this kit up.

It also comes with several stands, a Tama snare, some pedals, three Tosco Italian made cymbals, a Zildjian cymbal (trashed), a throne, and some other twiddly bits. He had it marked at 799. I talked to him and he just wants to get rid of it. He liked me and said he'd give it up for 300 even out the door. He's tired of looking at it. I told him I'd get back with him in a day or two.

Can anyone come up with a reasonable answer to the 10 inch tom from 65 or 66? Did they make this?

Saw something similar decades ago @ Lincoln Music in MKE.

Tags and all, this little oddity had a pair 'o bongo ridin' the rail

of a 20" kick. All matched in Red Glitter, date stamped...1964.

Combo/Cocktail/Tiki Bar conversation piece?

Generally, if you asked nice and put cash on the barrel, who knows?

Nice price for the lot, though.

Interesting- I know they made that 9x10 single headed drum in that era, the one that came with the Modern Combo outfit, also the late 50's catalogs show a 7x10 single head tom on the Krupa Jr outfit- but it seems like "anything" could be ordered back then. Even if someone converted it to two heads it is still a cool piece.

$300 sounds like a VERY decent price- the 14x14 floor is worth more than that even in the current market- and you would probably make most of the cost back just selling the accessories and the snare.

What color is the kit?

Don't know. It's got a thin black plastic wrapped around it. It was a home jobber that looks horrible. I checked the insides of the toms and verified they are in fact Slingerland with date stamps. Hardware (lugs, rims) are Slingerland. Oddly enough, there are some Ludwig lugs AND some Slingerland lugs on a tom. Thought that was odd. There was a second bass mount (Tama?) put in. There is a Rogers Swivo tom mount and a Ludwig tom mount attached to this. ODD! The floor legs are Ludwig and a couple of the lugs are Ludwig. Odd again. The shells are definitely Slingerland 65-66. This is Arkansas...there ain't no tellin' what they did to these drums to get them to work.

That was on the trashed Zildjian cymbal. Nothing odd there. That's pretty much standard fare for Arkansas percussionists.

"Duct Tape won the WAR!!!"

Don't ya know.

I will check in tomorrow to get a bit more info on them. I've only spent about five minutes with the drums. The rest of the time was spent talking with the owner. I'm going to look them over again and see if I can take a pic or two. I would also like to pull a bit of that black covering off a small portion to see what might be lurking underneath.
