Slingerland Spurs-Modern Equivalent? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Happy New Year my fellow forum comrades!

I am putting the (long overdue) finishing touches on my 1966 Slingerland Stage Band restoration, and the spur brackets are mounted up very high on the shell, and the spurs that I got from a fellow forum member (thanks blairndrums) are too short (I used the spurs for another project, so no biggie). The spurs I had from blair were 9 3/4" in length. When maxed out, they don't even touch the ground. I have some spurs from an MIJ kit that are 11" long, and those just BARELY hit the ground.

I know the Gibraltar spurs (below) are 12" long, and those would probably work, assuming they are the same diameter and will fit my original Slingerland Brackets (also pictured below). I have emailed Gibraltar several times to find out the diameter of the spurs themselves. They keep emailing back the spacing of the mounting holes, even though I told them what I needed (as an aside, Gibraltar's customer service is not very good).

Does anybody know if the Gibraltar spurs will work? Anyone have an idea on longer spurs? I thought about putting the Pearl Air Suspension Floor Tom Leg tips on my 11" MIJ spurs and that would most likely work (gives me about 2" more or so), but would also look goofy and unoriginal as hell!

Thanks!

There are many replacement rods in the proper diameter listed on eBay all the time. I would say that you should get spurs that are no shorter than 12" long. If you can find longer ones, get 'em. You can make your own by having stainless steel rods cut to the desired length. Just cap them off with the "crutch tips" of the vintage shape and size that almost any good drum department has in stock. Or, order them online. I'm advocating the last suggestion that I made about the stainless steel rods. You'll be the only one to know that you got 'em at Home Depot, and not at a pro drum shop.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Most of the Gibraltar stuff is 10.5mm... You need 9.5mm... Jammin Sam has some straight 9.5mm legs but they too look short. However they do have 9.5mm FT legs.. these could be cut down & do the job... (you would then have a new set of rubbers too)..

Cheers

John

You can just get some .375" (3/8" or 9.5 mm) steel rod and make your own. Add a pair of the Gibralter ISO feet and your done. :)

The 3/8" diameter has always worked for any of my mid 20th century Slingerlands or SlingerLeedys that I have owned.

Why not just get the proper length SlIngerlands? They came in various lengths.

Thanks for the replies. Where is the best place to get the 3/8" or 9.5 mm steel rods? Home Depot etc?

I found the stainless rods at an Ace hardware store. My application was for a ludwig clubdate. Just take the bracket in with you to test fit. Another forum member actually ground down the tips to points on a bench grinder. Although i recall he wore out the discs in the grinder.

Here's a place I've used in the past. They will cut to length for you.

There was a time in the sixties where the diameter changed from 5/16ths to 3/8ths....don't recall when...
