Recently I bought a late 60s 5x14 Sound king and I loved it so much I bought a 6.5, 10 lug version. It just arrived today and, apart from needing a clean, seems pretty good and sounds great too. But I noticed that the badge seems to be on the opposite side of the drum than the others I've seen. Is this common? It is also a little bit loose but there's nowhere else for the badge to go so I assume it's original. The serial # (190xxx) dates it to around the mid 70s I think.

Its my understanding that these badges could be on right or lrft side if the strianer. i have seen them both ways..
You could make the grommet tighter on the drum by taking a round headed hammer from the inside of the drum and tap it with another hammer lighty to make the grommet tighter or you could do the same thing with a rounded head bolt...Mikey
Thanks Mikey, that's good to know.
Would'nt it be fair to say Slingerland was'nt the most 'uniform' company in the world, especially when it came to snare drums? I can line up 4 Sound Kings and none of the badges or throw-off's are never in one certain position or place.

Thanks redneckdrum. Perhaps the shell got flipped upside down during the drilling and bed crimping process. The badge would have been easy enough to spin around.
Anyway, here she is all polished up. I have to say, the Slingerland chrome is really nice. It's a very handsome drum.
Nice drum! I've been looking for one with a black/brass badge to compliment my 5x14, which as you stated, is a great drum.
Congratulations!

Thanks Slingerlynn. I'm loving these drums.
Longjohn - it has a Remo coated control sound batter and an Aquarian American Vintage snare side. They were on it when I bought it. I played it at rehearsal last night and it sounded good but I reckon a coated ambassador would be better. It has 30 strand Puresound wires on it too which I've never used before. They may take some getting used to.

Fine looking drum Andrew. I'm partial to larger snare drums, and many in my collection are 6.5 or larger. You did a great job cleaning it up as well. I don't know about those 30 strand snares. Certainly different than what was original to the drum.
Excellent acquisition.
Best.
