i wasn't aware that is how they shape the snare beds on those drums. looks like they just shmooshed the shell to compensate for snare. is that normal?

yea,
the brass shelled slingerlands have that "feature". The snare bed is essentially a controlled crumple.

Most likely that drum had the TDR or Slap shot throw off...they both used the same two hole pattern as the rapid.
Those drums often had three vent holes; one with the badge.
As mentioned, in the 1976 catalog, that drum is # 193...it's the Buddy Rich model 6.5" x 14" COB.

I completed snare drum with 2 Ludwig P-85 snare strainer,whole patern is same 2 1/2",and I didnot need too drill anything
Its awesome sounding snare!
