Slingerland Snare

Loading...

I have a blue metallic Slingerland snare that I recieved about 8 years ago. I brought it to a Sam Ash right after I found it and they told me to hang on to it, it was worth a bunch of money. I know nothing about this....so I came here for help on identifying it. The serial number is 112295. The drum seems to be 14"x4.5"(I may be off on the measurments)Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about Slingerland serial numbers ~ how accurate they are in regard to year of issue, but my Slingers are from around 1966 (the last number in the date stamp in the kick is smudged, could be a 3, 5, 6, 8 - arrgh) but my 12" tom is 120120 & 14" floor is 117656 - so it's likely to be a 1960s snare.

Here's a link to the Vintage Drum Guide's snare page - it should be very helpful. There's a similar blue sparkle a little more than half way down the page: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_snare_page.html

Any idea who's autograph that is?

...but when he played on his drum, he made the stars explode....

danrheller: From what I can see (with my one good eye), your snare drum is a Slingerland "Artist" Model. It appears to have a Zoomatic ("tombstone") strainer on it, which replaced the company's clamshell strainer around 1964. By 1965 the strainer featured a smaller knob and had the word "SLINGERLAND" stamped on it. You might want to take a look at yours. Based on the above, your badge should be a Slingerland Black & Brass Niles, correct? Once you take a closer look at your strainer and badge you should be able to narrow down the year of the drum (assuming that the strainer & badge are ORIGINAL to the drum). If you review the Slingerland Section of this site you'll notice that the company had several versions of its Sparkling Blue finish. Nice drum!

Forgot to mention that the "Artist" Model snares measure 5.5 x 14. To correctly measure you drum, remove the heads and measure from the top of the shell to the bottom.FYI

I will find a drum key and take the head off, but about how much is an artist worth? The badge appears to be the black/brass or the black/bronze niles.

Other than the one shown in the catalog, I don't think a zoomatic without "Slingerland" on it ever existed...I've never seen or heard of one.

According to the Dr's chart that drum was from around '64 or '65...right around when they were switching from solid to 3 ply shells.

Nice drum either way...if it's a 3 ply, it should sell from about $225-300; a solid shell from $300-500...

Well, the zoomatic does say slingerland on it diagonaly. How do I tell if it's a 3 ply or solid?(i'm a car guy...not drummer, found the drum in the trash of a buddies glass shop)
