Well, it's my understanding that the Slingerland Niles' badges used on the company's snare drums from the 60s were black & brass other than some marching drums. The company's so-called "transition" black & silver badge was issued in 1970, I believe.

The Gene Krupa Sound King with a chrome over brass shell came in both 8-lug and 10-lug versions between 1963 and 1977. The shell was smooth until 1965 at which time the company manufactured them with three lines around the middle.

I'm sure that some of the Slingerland "experts" on this forum will help you out with your concerns.

Well, I could only find one of these that recently sold on e-Bay. It was an 8-lugger in extremely clean condition, which went for $225.00. The $130 price sounds great, but I've got no idea if the rims are original, whether the strainer functions properly, whether there's any extra holes, etc., etc..

Owner claims there are no extra holes or mods done -not sure if the rims are OEM . still waiting for pics

I'll keep you posted---Thanx

BTW what should i look for on this drum any tips?

The Gene Krupa Sound King would be in a 5x14 or 6 1/2 x 14 configuration, would feature a brass shell, with 8 or 10 lugs and a Zoomatic (tombstone) strainer. In 1965, the company reduced the size of the knob on the Zoomatic strainer and stamped a large "Slingerland" on it.

Around 1967 they introduced a "Dual Super Snare Strainer" but this strainer was no longer catalogued after 1976. I doubt that the drum you're looking at would have that particular strainer.

If original, the drum should also have triple-flanged chrome over brass hoops which flange inward toward the middle of the drum. These are known as "stick-saver" hoops. There should also be a dial-tone muffler assembly mounted on the shell on the panel to the left of the badge.

I'd also take a closer look at the badge to see if it is, in fact, a black over silver in lieu of a black over brass. My assumption is that it's a Niles, Illinois badge. See if it has a serial number on it.

Good luck!Keep on Pl

Ok, it's got the tombstone style thro (strainer) with what apears to be a "round knob" in the center bottom of the tombstone ,on top--a lever that swings left & right-- and i think... STREAMLINE lugs

Cannot see a muffler knob---cannot see "slingerland' written on the thro

Prior to 1965 the word "SLINGERLAND" was not on the tombstone strainer.

If the drum does have Imperial lugs, they certainly wouldn't be original, since Ludwig used these on their Supraphonics.

I'm always a little leery (might be the "old age" thing kickin' in here!) of dark and/or blurry pictures. Whenever I've got questions regarding a possible purchase, I ask directly. If the current owner can't or refuses to provide answers, I'd stay clear of him. He should be willing and able to provide responses to your inquiries, especially since he's trying to make a sale.

I'd be asking directly regarding the strainer, the rims (COB?), the muffler, etc. Just my thoughts!
