Slingerland Snare Date and Drum Brand

Loading...

Greetings! I recently obtained a Slingerland snare drum that I am trying to identify the exact year. The digits on the drum badge are 555379. What is throwing me off is the snare throw off. It is different than other chrome Slingerland snares from the sixties. I will probably end up selling on the forum after I identify the year.

Also with this purchase I obtained 4 other drums, probably a cheap brand from the sixties. I have a picture of the dirty bass drum and one of the toms. The lugs are chrome but the muffler on the tom is plastic. I am trying to determine the brand. Thank you for any help with these!

I have no idea of the answers to your questions, but I am impressed with the sheer bizarreness of the tom holder and the house paint on the drums!

Hi Ken!

Your snare drum is from the end of Slingerland production at the Niles factory in Chicago. The serial number dates it to around 1985. I believe the last drums were produces around 1986. The strainer is the "Rapid", but with the TDR throw-off arm, which did happen. Here's a link for the strainer... https://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_5_strainers_rapid-6.html

As to your other drums, an educated guess says that it is a "Percussion Plus". I'm basing that on a Percussion Plus "super sensitive" snare drum I had some years ago. The tone control arm resembles the one on your tom and the lugs look like they would match those on your shells. I believe these are late 80's or 90's drums. Hope this information helps a bit!

Also including a picture of a model #190 snare drum I had, which used the TDR strainer. You can see the throw-off arm is the same as the one on your "Rapid" strainer.

I thank everyone for their replies. It is an ugly paint job and same with the tom holder. I will try to sell the old painted drums for parts minus the "patch up" job on the tom holder.
