Slingerland restoration

Loading...

Hi, I'm new here and have lots of questions because I want to do this as correct as possible.

First off, I've owned this set since about 1975 but have been stored in a storage building for years. I now have room for more than one drum set set up and wanted to restore what I have back to as original as makes sense without spending way more that feasible.

what I have identified so far is the bass drum is dated Nov 1960 and is a 14" x 20"... the snare is the standard 5.5" x 14" maple snare with no date but matches the bass and floor tom finish and has the same type of Niles no serial number badge. the floor tom is a 16" x 16" with push button adjusters on the legs, no badge and a date of Aug 1961.

the ride tom was set up like a concert tom and had 6 Slingerland lugs but did not have a "stick saver" rim with no date or markings of any type. I suspect this is not Slingerland at all the way it was modified but it does have the "spade" type mount on it..

what I want to do is locate a 8" x 12" original Slingerland tom from at least the 60's to recover to match the new recover I'm going to do the the rest. I'm not sure if the original would have a significantly better feel or sound than the one I have, but I could modify it to work I suppose but it's probably not great quality.

I've ordered a Steve Maxwell "consolette" mount to replace whatever they modified and put on here before I got it.

I also have no idea how the "throw off" is supposed to work because mine doesn't.. it came with a Rodgers pedal for the bass and a Slingerlang Hi-Hat and some very lightweight cymbal stands.

any tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I'll follow with pictures if that will help identify what I need to do. help is greatly appreciated, this set up needs a lot of TLC. anyone know of a decent 8"x 12" ?

thanks in advance.. TM

Pictures are necessary for us to offer any suggestions for the restoration.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

ok, trying to figure out what these extra holes in the bass drum shell might have been for... an extra tom mount was added so there are extra holes but if you notice at the top of the shell is the badge/vent hole then down the right side are three filled white holes, could those had anything to do with a cymbal mount? any ideas...

Hi diver88...and Welcome to the forum!

Those very small plugged white holes on the bass drum are a mystery to me. They just appear too tiny for any type of standard mount. Not sure what they were used for.

You mentioned about using the Steve Maxwell rail consolette. I can tell you that it is a great mount! I've got one on my 1967 Slingerland kit. I did spend extra to outfit the mount with chrome bolts and nuts, as I wasn't crazy about the generic parts that Steve uses.

Best of luck with your restoration. I love Slingerland drums from the 60's and early 70's!

Thanks Mark,

I know being a 1961 set that things are different than yours but I just realized that my bass has spurs mount to the hoop in front vs how yours are.... I'm also planning on using the silver sparkle to recover them. they were originally gold but the gold available today is quite different.

by looking at pictures a few minutes ago I think I identified an extra bracket I have that might be the cymbal mount that attaches to the bass. it looks much different than I expected so I'll see if it matches up with any of those holes. since I may have the original bracket now I need to hunt down the cymbal arm to go with it.

I got the Steve Maxwell consolette and to be honest I'm not really that happy with it. it looks used with gouges in the rail and little spots of rust all over. whats worse is Ive called several times over the last two weeks and cant get in touch with anyone..... it looks like it will do the job but it does not look as new as I thought it would. :)
