Slingerland redux

Hi folks. New poster. A lot of good stuff in here.

Long story short: I've got an early 60s Slingerland kit (bass, floor tom, snare) that, due to some financial shortcomings, I topped out with a couple Japanese knock-off toms in the early 70s. As I enter my dotage, I have come to believe I should fill out the set with Slingy rack toms. You know, respect the gear.

The questions: The bass has never been drilled. What are the risks of setting a mount in a 1962 drum?

Are the old Set-o-matic mounts the way to go?

What do I need to know about the tom mounts? Are there any compatability issues?

I've seen plenty of available drums out there but there appear to be a lot of movable parts.

A lot of people here will tell you not to drill that bass drum. If it was me I would keep it original and use a snare stand or a suspension mount off a stand. But it is your drum and you can do whatever you like. If you were to install a tom mount, keep it period and use a rail mount.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, Lucky. The bass is in pristine condition and punching a hole in it just didn't seem right. Plus the vent is centered, leaving just four inches to squeeze a mount in. Wouldn't have worked.

I have been using two old snare stands through the years. Not the cleanest look. I've never thought of suspension mount and it's been decades since I bought new equipment. I suppose I should get a hold of the new toms before I start wondering how to set them up.

White marine pearl. The snare (1962) is a 5.5x14 Hollywood Ace model (I believe); bass 14x20 1963; 16x16 floor tom 1964. (Piecemeal collection; couldn't buy it all at once.) Threw in a 9x12 Apollo and 10x13 Stewart in '73 because the price was right.
