I have a 1965 Slingerland kit that is waiting to be refurbished. I need buttons for the three leg mounts on the floor tom. Jim Petty has these and I paid for them almost 6 months ago...but have yet to receive them! I guess it's time to call Jim on Monday to see what's up! I really get along well with Jim, so I may have to bust his chops on what's going on!

I bought them from him, it did take several weeks to receive them. They worked perfectly, which is good, since it's basically a short bolt with the top ground down a bit, and then chromed. As far as the mechanism, I never had problems with slippage.

I retract my previous comment about rivets. Did not realize they were threaded at the end.

That being said, anyone got any advice on how to get a stuck leg out of one of these confounded things?

You’ll need to remove the leg mount screws from the inside of the floor tom first.

I’ve found a picture of the inside of a leg mount and solutions others have used as replacements. I don’t like either because they look like they need to be tightened/loosened instead of just pushed in but it will work. I like the short hex head type bolt idea, (bigger button surface) maybe use a stainless steel one. I think they even sell chromed ones at Ace hardware.

I have! I've got the casing alone and the leg is just stuck inside. I've tried everything. Not entirely sure what the leg is even stuck on at this point, even did some cleaning of the inside.

Then I've got one where the leg is just going into it at an angle, so getting that one out is going to be awful as well.

I am starting to see why they switching to wing screws.

You’ll probably need three hands for this (or mount it back on the drum). You’ll need to maybe try a small screwdriver to push on the same surface that the push button is pushing to compress that spring while the leg is gently being pulled out. Only a straight leg or the straight portion of the leg should be going through the leg mount.

I may have just been lucky but I did find exact matches in the storm door department of my local hardware store. The little thumb screws that hold screens and windows in, as far as I could tell, where the exact same thing as Slingerland's buttons.

Oh...and Olimpass is right, they're a three handed operation for sure!

10-32 button head bolts will work. That's what I've used in the past. You can even get chrome plated ones (pricey though). Any bolt that size will work but the button head, or truss head, will be the closest to the size of the original button.
