What a cool kit! I don't see many in LBP with concert toms. Very few over the years actually.

Early 70's serials. Approx. '72. Check out the finishes article by DrCJW at the VDG. Light blue pearl pattern changed in '73. Also, the lettering on your badges should be slightly raised. After '72 the lettering is silk screened and not raised. Bass drum looks like an early 5-ply. Neat set.

Yes, I think restoration is the order of the day.

The wrap does appear to be the early version.

Now I have to find the textured chrome vinyl for the inside of the bass drum. It looks like it was a material used as backsplash for kitchens.

So I’ve cleaned up and assembled just the 12” tom so far.

Just novus 2 on the wrap.

I used liquid gold on the interior and ended up darkening the maple quite a bit. The clear coat finish inside was mostly worn away. Looks like it may have been a rats home at some point? Also the batter side re-ring looks pretty bad at the overlap. But looks like it left the factory that way as the finish is over the splintered wood.

Mainly the top of the 22. Yes they are “yellowing” which if you remember the ziplock bag commercials “yellow and blue make green!”

I am just doing the novus #2 treatment for now. I am not really into wet sanding or using retr0bright on these shells at the moment.

Possibly in the future I may try to get them back to blue.

All shined up. Remo CS blackdots and a muffle on the kick.

In the end I decided to paint the vinyl, clear coat it and reglue it back into the shell. Pretty fun little kit. With some light duty bags I could nest the 12”, 16” and 22” together in one bass drum case and one snare case.

Beautiful! I actually like the greening of the wrap. Did it come with the Krupa Sound King snare and the flat base stands?

As for the sloppy re-ring, yeah, I wound up cutting new bearing edges on my 1970ish New Rock 50 because the original edges were so sloppy. Well-made shells, and with the new edges they sound like a million bucks, but before that, they were much harder to tune and had wolf tones.

Perhaps some future drum collector will bemoan the fact that I put my vintage Slingerlands on the router table and cut precise 30-degree edges with a roundover so that they would sound good and be easy to tune. How awful for them.
