Slingerland Mystery - Please help

Loading...

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Slingerland kit that has been standing in storage for more than 10 years. Someone mentioned that they think it might be in the Artist Classic/Custom range somewhere.. and manufactured 1980-1985...but i am not sure at all..

12", 13", 16", 22" - wooden shells

14" steel snare (possibly 5,5"/6" deep)

Each of the 12 and 13 toms has two badges on it. One with a serial number and one without. The serial numbers on all the shells start with the number 940...

Very impressed with the sound of these shells and even more impressed with the hardware (steel/schrome) - it's soo heavy and durable. it looks really top vintage as well.

My questions as follows:

- What wood is used in these shells?

- What is the model name of this Slingerland kit?

- Possible date (range) of manufacture?

Adding a dropbox link with some pics of the kit

Would really appreciate some help on this! Thanks!

Thanks for the info.

Had a look at the Spirits, seems to be diverse models and dates of manufacture.

Some oaks mentioning that the Spirits was the first kits to be made abroad and imported - but most of it was used by original shells in the US that was shipped off to be made under contract in the East? Also the fact that they are using pre-1980 hardware on this kit maybe? Any ideas regarding this?

Any idea to what precise Spirit Series model this is?

i guess it's a maple shell construction?

would love to narrow down the date of manufacture - so please let me know if you have a more specific idea regarding this.

Thanks again.

Take a look at the 1986 badge, http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_1_badges.html

Those are the spirit line.. My dad just picked up a similar kit with some god awful power toms.. The same 3 ply no re-ring shells though, which seem to be made in the USA, so im thinking of cutting down the toms and making something "good" out of them some day.

Seems like the main difference is my dads kit uses the foil badges which seemed to have been destined for the sono tube shells, but those were a flop so they used the rest of the badges on these kits, until they switched to the 1986 badge which you have

If the drums have 2 badges,It's an Artist classic series. Maple/ Mahogany

5 ply shells assembled in Taiwan, serial numbers starting with 940…. puts around 93.

Cheers Stevo.

thanks for the feedback.

it's good to know what the wood composition is on these shells.

only the 12 and 13 toms have 2 badges each.

is it the right thing to confirm that IF there is two badges on the shells that this is definitely Artist Classic shells?

could it be that all was made in the US and only shipped later to Taiwan to be assembled later..?

if it was made only in 93 - why the use of the super-old, vintage hardware and the double tom holder especially?

Based on research I did on a 90's era kit I wanted to buy, which had badges sized just like the 70's niles badges but just said "USA".... I think those were the artist series and they were American wood sent to Asia to be made into shells, then sent back here to be built into drums.

These spirit drums don't seem to be the same
