Slingerland model question

Loading...

Hi all - hope you are safe and well. I am trying to find out a little more about a snare drum I own. I restored it from a bit of a wreck - about seven or eight years ago. I'll will just set out what I do know, and hope someone can help with my question: what model is it?

Purchased re-wrapped in WMP.

Chicago badge.

Single ply shell.

Had been drilled and filled very badly, including epoxy - araldite? filler with even a washer used as wood fill.

Inscriptions e.g. bible verses etc, written in ballpoint deeply into the interior - which was natural wood finish.

At one stage the entire drum was used upside down, with the strainer and the damper moved to the batter head.

Speedy throw

Sticksaver rims.
I seem to recall that the owner told me he added the rims and the throw, which were genuine parts. The issue is that although I looked very carefully, I couldn't see any holes for a 3 point RK throw and butt. If you look at the images you can see I had to make a plug for one section of the shell because it was just crumbling away (epoxy and metal washer) But I couldn't see any evidence of an RK throw.

I thought the Artist model was released in the 60's? So if the badge is original and it's a single ply Slingerland that didn't have an RK strainer - what is it? What can you see that I am missing?

Thanks for your time - it's much appreciated.

More pictures. I've tried to show the snare ends of the drum. I can't see the six small holes that the RK strainer used. Is there another Slingerland snare from Chicago, with a natural interior single ply shell that is not a Radio King?

Hi ts!

Your drum could very well be a Radio King, but with the Clamshell strainer. Attached are some pictures of an example. Do the strainer holes appear to line up with those in the pictures?

+1 with Mark. Also note the hardware layout on Mark's clamshell throw example. Badge one panel to right of throw off and tone control 180 degrees across from badge. This is most likely the original layout of your drum. This layout was used late '60 into early '61 according to Dr Carl Wenk. Your badge, two-pad tone control and double slot lug screws are all consistent with that timeline. Looks like you currently have the butt and throw installed in reverse on your drum.

Thanks very much for the replies - yes, I do think it's an early RK with a clamshell as the holes do line up. It was a very early restoration and as slinger fan has pointed out, the current strainer is reversed. That happened because I followed the arrangement as I purchased it. I've thought about this and feel that since it's a rewrap etc, I might leave it, as currently it sounds so good. The snare response is so nice I'm scared of messing with it! It's a fine drum and I feel fortunate to own it. Thanks again and do take care.

t-studio, the official model name for your snare as well as the example Mark posted is Super Gene Krupa. Slingerland ceased using the Radio King name on drums around '57/'58 so technically neither of these drums is a Radio King. The name would be resurrected starting in '62 but only for two very specific snare drums.

That's really important thanks very much! I love that name as I have a son called Gene. Just wondering for clarity - if the badge is legit, would that not narrow the drum to 56-59? Take care. PK

Good question and perhaps I am wrong (old eyes, LOL).

Your badge does not appear to have the looped "S" in Slingerland.

If that is the case your badge narrows your drum to '59-'61.

The hardware layout further narrows it to '60-'61.

Note the looped "S" and non looped "S" black/brass Chicago badges near the lower right hand corner of this chart: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_1_badges.html Please correct me if I've made a mistake.
