$250.00 is a general going price.

I would tend to agree with this price! However, condition and rarity of the wrap can force prices up! I have pictures of thousands of kits and snare drums from eBay. A Hollywood Ace, wrapped in Capri Pearl, sold for $405...but that was back in 2010!

Great snare drum and has the standard throw, not the more finicky Zoomatic like the one-ply Artist snare (which usually goes for more money and was the other wooden 8 lug Slingerland snare of the time). I even prefer them over Radio Kings. Warm but cracking rim shot and can still sound musical when dried out. Great for jazz and early funk. That said, $250-$300 is about right. I got one in a rare wrap for $187 shipped but that was an eBay auction. Rare wraps command more, but IMO it sounds better than the wood snares the other 3 major American brands made. (Hides from wood Dynasonic crowd).

I did a little research on another one of the items I saw in his collection, and that one appears to be a student model Radio King. It has a 3 ply shell (probably the same as the Hollywood Ace), sticker choppers hoops and clips, and a 3-point strainer with no extender brackets. My research shows that this model later came with the Rapid strainer, so the models with the 3-point were probably 1950s - just a guess though.

I agree--I've owned several Jazz Fests, some Gretschs, and a couple of wood Rogers. None of them compare to the Hollywood Ace. I don't know why. I would think that the Ludwigs would sound comparable, but they just don't.
