Slingerland history

Loading...

I really need help as soon as possible.

I was just offered to buy a Slingerland 1973 Copper over wood kit sizes 24", 13", 14", 18" to a heavily reduced price.

Probably quite a bargain if you know what you should look for.

My questions are:

1. Are there any special years you should be aware of when it comes to Slingerland drums? (Like Rogers 1963 moving to GB from US...)

2. I've been told that the copper/chrome-models were the "finer" models, is that true?`

3. Tell me all you know about the early 70:ies models. I want to know it all.

Yes, the copper kits are hard to find and even harder to find in excellent

condition. They had problems with that finish and it never took off like

other finishes.

If you can find a set in excellent shape and or close then it is

really worth it. If the price is so reduced, you can't go wrong

with it.

Anything Slingerland in my opinion up until the 80's is worth it at

a reduced price.

Any drums for that matter at a reduced price are worth it to me!!

Other then that it also depends on the sound you are going for. Many people try to find a newer sound in vintage drums and then they wind up cutting the edges or changing them to achieve that sound.

If you can afford them and they are that reduced, I would get them.

Now, if they are totally messed up with the finish you can still get them

and possibly re-wrap them in the finish of your choice.

Lots of questions for you.

Thanks for your replies.

The finish on the drums is far from perfect, but there are no serious flaws on the finish - no bigger scratches or something like that. Just oxidation, like you would imagine since it's copper.

I understand why Slingerland had problems with this finish, it isn't exactly what you would call beautiful...

The 3 drums that I will use: 24", 14" and 18" are in really good condition and hopefully it will be possible to make them shine again (like they probably did 34 years ago.) If not, I will probably follow your advice to rewrap them.

The sound I'm going for is of course the 70ies drum sound, I already own a custom built pork pie to fulfill my modern drum sound needs.

Nice tip - just saw exactly one of these advertised up here 13, 14, 18, 24 for reasonable money. Presuming you're not in Sweden.
