Slingerland First generation Set-O-Matic tom holder Q.......

Hi everyone. Moving along on my Slingerland project. I have a question about the first generation of the set o matic tom holder. I put both toms (12"-13") on the mount last night and dropped the angle back far as I could. The toms are almost level. Hmmmm...... for the heck if it I pitched the mount back the other way and I get the tom angle I like. But this puts the toms forward way over the bass drum to the point of looking awkward. I remember my 70's SOM not having the best angle travel either but it was better than this. Is this pretty common for the earlier 60's version? I have the tom mounts on the correct sides of the 12 and 13 toms. And the set o matic ball and parts are assembled correctly. That was my first thought I mixed something up but it's all good. Is this is just the way it is??? If so I see a 70's SOM in my future. LOL.

Well I sorta found a workable solution. And the ball of the SOM faces in towards the kit not out like the later mounts. Looking at the toms in place they look ok. And give me the angle I want and then some. Not sure if it's correct but once I get the heads on and fully assembled I'll show some pictures on my resto thread. And see what everyone thinks. Peace! Where on the Bassdrum sits the mount? forward or dead centre,

Cheers

It's actually more towards the back of the drum.

Therin lies the problem.. they eventually settled on mounting in the centre of the bd..

Sounds like you have done all that you can do.. A later Super set o matic (may).. help with your set up.. but it's a decade later than your kit so wrong.

It's a limited mounting system by todays standards.. but you can adapt to it..

Cheers.

I see thanks. Sounds like there must have been some growing pains with the early version. All in all it should work ok for me.

I took another look at the catalog scans tonight. And I do have the SOM the correct way. And the angle is fine. Just a bit of my Old Timers setting in I guess.
