slingerland drum, rogers mount?

Just got a 12" slingerland tom, stamped Aug, '65.

The tom (as is the rest of the kit) is wrapped in a solid glossy black. The guy I bought it from, and I both agree that it is most likely a re-wrap, but he said the original owner swore that it was original.

Was solid blackm (glossy) wrap even available on Sligerland's in '65? What are the chances that this is the original wrap?

Also, the original owner fitted the tom with a ludwig tom mount. However after removing it and matching the holes, I'm almost positive there was a factory installed Rogers swivo mount. The bass also shows proof that a rogers swivo tom mount was used.

Is this common of slingerland drums to use Rogers mounts? Ive seen Repercussions.org offer a gretsch round bade era kit with factory installed Rogers mounts.

Any opinions as to wheter I should use a rogers mount (since the holes are already there) or track down a slingerland mount.

Please keep in mind this is a players drum kit, which I'd like to restore as close as possible to original, but have no intentions of making it a perfect museum kit . (dont even think that would be possible with all the add ons).

Slingerland offered gloss black. They called it black beauty pearl. I'd guess Slingerland never sent out drums with Rogers mounts, but it wasn't uncommon to have a set sent to a drum shop, and the store would install the tom mount of choice. There's a Slingerland 8 x 10" glossy promo shot of Joe Cusatis, with the "100% Slingerland" script on it. In the shot, Joe is playing a gloss black set (I think he still teaches on that set); the spurs and, I think, the tom mount are Rogers swivomatic.

It's more common to see Camco drums with factory supplied Rogers mounts...that's what they cataloged for a while. Also, there are a lot of Gretsch sets from the '60s and '70s with Rogers or Slingerland tom mounts.

thanks for the info! I am thinking about re-wrapping it in WMP. And restoring to its original condition. Im just not sure if I should put rogers swivomatic parts (as the holes are already drilled) or use the walberg & augue mount, as (I believe) were the norm for the '65 era slingerlands.

Any comments / suggestions??

One thing I forgot to mention was that there is no slingerland badge on this tom. All the other features, tell me this is original Slingerland, so I'm not worried about it being a knock -off, but would Slingerland have not used a badge on a 12" tom? The date stamped inside is Aug ?? 1965. There is now tan paint/sealer on the inside. Which should be the norm for the '65 era slingerlands.

Once again any help/comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Slingerland didn't put badges on their toms until the late '60s. Keep in mind, when you re-wrap, you greatly devalue the drums...more so that the extra holes do. Also, the current available WMP doesn't match the Slingerland of that era. Of course, if you're just planning on keeping the drums, the re-wrap could look real nice. Also, if you're going to re-wrap, you could fill the holes and use a snare stand or RIMS mount...either would be more functional.

thanks again for the info, rich. I've heard before that Slingerland's WMP is different than what is today called WMP.

Ill probablly use precision drum companies "Antique white pearl". Though from what I understand they offer a pearl called "continental" which is supposed to replicate vintage Slingerland WMP. It is too bright white for me, which is why I am going with the antique pearl.
