Slingerland Chicago snare

Loading...

Hi guys and gals,

Today I bought a Slingerland snare with duco paint and a Black and Brass Chicago Oval Badge (1956-1959).

I saw a large "M" stamped on the inside but no date. It has a single pad muffle. It has 8 lugs.

The butt seems original but it has a repro strainer that is attached using the top two original holes. The bottom hole on the repro strainer doesn't line up with the original and luckily the previous owner didn't add a new hole - it's just resting against the shell. There are a few chips in the paint elsewhere on the shell.

I'm trying to figure out what the original strainer would have been.

I will post pics tonight (sorry for the tease!).

Here are a couple of pics.

The hoops are chrome over brass (did the magnet test).

Seems to be original bottom head and snares.

Thanks!

The "M" on the inside indicates a shell with a maple outer ply intended to be painted (which it is) or some natural finish. Shells intended to be wrapped were stamped with a "P" for pearl.

Great drum and condition! That is the strainer you need. They turn up. Nice ones can get spendy.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Excellent snare drum! Really glad to hear that the previous owner did not drill an extra hole for the strainer. As previously stated, the original strainers can get pricey, but keep your eyes open.

Something seems kind of odd about this... Maybe I'm just geting confused. I thought that student model radio kings came only in certain arrangements. One being single flange hoops with a 3 point strainer, second being single flange hoops and a rapid strainer, or third with the COB stick saver hoops and a rapid strainer, which would have been at the absolute latest production of when the Chicago badge era, then going over into the niles il. Era. So a student model radio king with COB stick saver hoops and the hole alignment for a 3 point is kind of odd to me. Obviously that's a reproduction Gibraltar strainer, but for that to be there and no extra holes drilled, would mean an original 3 point was there at some point in time. Interesting...

EDIT: I guess after I think about it for a few minutes, it could just be a special order. As always with these old drums, you can never truly know! Happy drumming.
