Slingerland Cardboard Shells?

Loading...

I have heard that Slingerland may have made drums with cardboard or some other dense material other than wood. Well, imagine my surprise when I came across a creme wrapped set 1973-1986 Niles badge at my local drum shop. 22 kick, 12, 14 rack, 16 FT plus 8 and 10 inch concert toms. The set had painted interior, kind of a black speckled finish, no re-rings. It appeared to have a single thick ply of material with a thin veneer on the inside of the shell and only the wrap on the outside. The set came with a reasonably good condition Sound King snare also. I have found nothing on the internet and I do not own the Slingerland book.

Does anyone know anything about these drums? Do they have any value?I have some poor cell phone pics that I can post later in the week if that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

These never worked and are nothing but trouble. The parts might be worth moving to better shells.

Their talked about in the DrCJW section and also in his Slingerland forum section. (Found under the contact page)

David:

When you remarked that "these never worked" and are "nothing but trouble" what exactly do you mean?

Is it a safe assumption (and I hate this word) that these represented Slingerland's "economy" or "budget" line of drums?

Would they function as a decent kit for a beginner or simply as a practice kit?

Any "words of wisdom" would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The shells warped and could not take the tuning, they were also affected by weather more then a normal shell.

I think they would function fine under normal use.

I'm hoping DrCJW chimes in and gives us the complete and most accurate story...
