Slingerland Buddy Rich Snare 4x14 questions

Loading...

Hello,

I picked up this COW snare on ebay late last year. I'm hoping to get some opinions on the snare beds - they look a little sloppy, like they've been modified. The chocolate-milk interior paint has been sanded away in those areas, I don't know if that's common for Slingerlands or not. I've attached some pics.

Also, the Zoomatic strainer appears to be missing a washer and nut on the inside, hopefully you can see this from the pics. Not sure what was there originally.

Lastly, someone did a butcher job on the badge, the inside is a little chewed up, the grommet is pretty bent up as well. The snare sounds alright, the Niles badge s/n (if it's even the original badge) reads 22817. There's also a number in pencil on the interior 062 50 2471.

Thanks for your time!

Eric, the paint inside the bearing edge that is normal over a period of time it wears out, i couldn't tell what you were asking about the zoomatic strainer!!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Hi vintagemore2000,

The bearing edges have paint, except where the snare beds start, it looks like they were filed. I'm not sure if the paint was typically applied after the snare beds were put in or before, sorry I wasn't clear. As far as the Zoomatic, the wash and nut are missing on the interior of the drum, it looks like they would tighten against the shell around the threaded post of the Zoomatic. You can kind of see this in the 3rd picture - thanks for checking it out.

Hey Eric!...

Can't say as to whether or not your BR 4X14 COW was "messed with" although I would tend to think not as nothing has been changed on the drum per se... but that said:

I'll attach a couple pics of my 1970 Slingerland BR 4X14 as well as an interior shot of the PROPER attachment screws/nut for the Zoomatic. Yours is indeed missing a part as you will be able to see. Your serial number is CORRECT for this year/model, so I so believe that the badge is original. I restored this drum as the COW was trashed... it buffed out nicely though! StickChopper hoops were OEM on my drum too... pure Buddy! It's an excellent playing/sounding snare drum, and truth be told, Buddy much preferred the COW 4X14 to the WMP 4x14 although he did play both. I also have a 1970 WMP 4X14 Slingerland BR and it's only a few hundred away on the serial number from my COW model. Brothers!

Hi Tommy,

Wow, yours is immaculate! Beautiful. It looks like mine was cleaned with steel wool at one time! I need to find a stickchopper hoop for the top.

Thanks for the interior pic, I'll have to come up with something. Can you tell me if your snare beds are close to how I described mine? I know Slingerlands can be inconsistant, but the interior paint missing or sanded away makes me think modification. Thanks for your time and again beautiful drums.

Hey Eric!...

Too funny!... I went to have a look at mine so I could visually check the beds for you, and when I got back to post, you had written asking if I could check mine! LOL!! Anyway...

Hmmm... you have a reason to be a tad unsure Eric. The beds on mine have ALL of the chocolate milk stain/paint intact and unmolested. Interestingly, and this I remember from ALL my Slingerland BR model snares, is that the beds as OEM are indeed quite deep/wide, which is odd as it looks like yours might have been re-cut deep/wide??!! How odd. Regardless... yeah, it would appear that yours have been modified, albeit slightly.

Too bad about the steel wool!!!!!!! The outer chrome wrap on mine DID NOT look as it does now either though. It was pretty trashed/scratched. I did a complete disassembly of the drum and proceeded to polish/buff with a wheel and a very light compound, Mequires if memory serves. These are REAL METAL wraps, thus they will "take" a little polishing without damage. After the compound I hand waxed with Mother's Gold, and the results are as shown. The drum itself was all there with an EXCELLENT interior and excellent hardware. It was just a matter of returning the outer chrome to a nicer condition... and in this case it worked! Take note of my badge...

It's black/gold indicating LATE 1968/69, just prior to the silver/black 1970 Slingerland badge. BOTH of my 4x14's have the same badge indicating that these are EARLY production of the Slingerland 4x14 Buddy Rich model!

Tommy,

That's what I was afraid of...the drum sounds box-y to me...I was thinking it was the beds. I heard your sound clips a while back and it sounds nothing like yours. I guess I'll try and dial it in again.

Thanks for checking for me and congrats on your awesome collection.
