Slingerland Buddy 4x14.....Help! Last viewed: 4 days ago

Hey all,

I just picked up a silver badge Slingerland 4X14 3 ply snare drum. The serial number is 26XXX making it circa 1971 I believe. It is in pretty good shape overall. I bought the drum off a fella here in town who has owned it for some time. I'll run down the details.

Here's the good: It has a COS batter stickchopper hoop and the Sound King lugs are in excellent condition. The Zoomatic works fine but is losing plating on the lever. The shell has correct period chocolate milk paint on the interior. An incorrect muffler was on the drum but a Slingerland muffler fits the holes perfectly and TommyP said that you could order these drums with mufflers. Most imporantly, the drum sounds good!

Here's the not as good: The resonant side hoop is a generic triple flanged version. I believe most of the rods and washers are incorrect. Here's the funny thing. The person used 4 pieces (!) of white marine pearl to recover the shell. It wasn't one piece.

I believe the recover is old since it has creamed out but just wonder if by chance if it was original Slingy wrap stripped off another drum. I was ready to strip off the covering when I wondered that. The color of the wrap is nice, but the recover job is pretty bad. I know it is a long shot about the wrap but when the drum is assembled, it doesn't look bad. The wrap doesn't fit flush on the shell in some places, like if it wasn't rolled down properly or not enough glue was applied. The pieces of covering aren't centered on the shell, either.

Would you rewrap it? If so would you do COW or WMP? I like the Continental wmp wrap but I don't think it is very period correct. I also don't know if they make an actual COW metal covering.

I think finding a COS stickchopper bottom hoop would be difficult but maybe not impossible. If I can't find that, I might just do a sticksaver on the bottom. They don't look that different from a distance. In fact, I might pick up a pair and just save the stickchopper. I don't care for the feel of stickchoppers.

Thanks!

I already took the drum apart. Yeah, couldn't wait. Needed to clean her up. Here's what the shell looks like.

Here's a pic. I'll have to take more tomorrow. That isn't a crack in the shell, that's a thin wood spacer between the reinforcement hoop and the shell. Looks all original. My Ludwigs had these too.

Left over scraps from another rewrap job?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Hey Gravy!

You have what I call a Road Kill snare, that just means you have an open slate to recreate this as you see fit. It just needs some love & a few $'s but will be an outstanding drum. Shell looks solid, but 'da wrap needs to go. Do you have any idea of what the drum was (wrap/finish) to begin with?...if not, it's a open slate & you can do with her what you want. I would definitely dump the 4 piece suit it has on...that's fugly...the drum deserves better! Dump a $100 (maybe less) or so into her & you'll have a beauty!

Just my :2Cents:

I believe the 2 most popular finishes for these were either WMP or the metal covered Chrome over Wood. I believe this drum will be outstanding and look pretty close to factory with just a little love.

The problem is that it is a mahogany outer ply which will splinter like crazy on removal of the wrap. The weird thing is that the gaps at the top and bottom show un molested mahogany so maybe whoever stripped this drum at least got that right. Of course, we'll really find out when I get this thing stripped.

Can anyone recommend the Continental WMP wrap? It looks pretty nice and has the larger chip pattern. I don't believe they make metal Chrome covering anymore, do they?

Gravy!...

They do not make COW "wrap" today, that is correct! As a matter of fact, the CHROME portion of the COW or COF was in fact thin spring steel that was chromed. It is near impossible to find today, although one could, but then the amount you have to buy makes it prohibitive. I restored a 1966/67 Fibes prototype 690/COF with the original throw/butt that never made it to production. I have only seen three of these snare drums, and one was Buddy's! This is EXACTLY the same model as Buddy's 1st Fibes prototype. Near impossible to find... but I finally did! Anyway...

The COF was TRASHED!!!! It had to be completly redone, and it had to be REAL METAL to be correct. I did it... but it was a tad difficult and a tad expensive. Completely worth it in the end though. As far as your Slingerland 4X14... go with WMP. Buddy played BOTH WMP and COW, but WMP would be the best route for you with this drum.. and .. not be too difficult to do! Just my opinion of course! Here's a pic of the 66/67 Fibes 690/COF that I restored with REAL METAL chromed wrap. Looks absolutely OEM!!!
