Slingerland Bebop restoration project

Loading...

Original Radio King parts do come up on ebay from time to time, but its a waiting game sometimes. If you can live with non-original chrome plated lugs, they do make reproduction beavertails now. The later sound-king lugs are being reproduced as well, as are stick-saver hoops. Also, there is a source for stick-chopper hoops too, but they are more Gretsch-like than Radio king-like and they are not engraved like radio king hoops are.

Sorry, I'm not of much help, but this is my first Slingerland resto as well....but so far that's what I've found out there....

I'm sorry, I know this is way off track and it touts my own agenda but, where the H do you get parts? I'm restoring a 1951 Slingerland Radio King. I need a three point snare strainer and a couple of beavertail lugs. I have looked high and low on every vintage site I can find. I'm even trying to get a hold of a guy in Italy from AK-Drum that makes repro parts new. I haven't been able to raise him on any level. E-bay has been a bust. I admit defeat I'm all out of ideas. I know that your restoration project is of a little more recent era than mine but have you ever had to hunt down parts?Anyone else that may read this, any and all help will be appreciated. I turn to you my brothers and sisters in the drumming community for help. I don't want the stuff for free, I'll happily pay for it. Can someone help a brother out? Thanks,Ross

I know of this one for sale at Maxwelldrums.com, Maybe he has parts you might need. It can`t hurt to try !!

Very nice, LuddyDude. I am glad you decided to go through with this one. I, too had planned on building a jazzer out of Slingy orphans. I had a 65 14 floor that was stained Maple. I needed the 12 and 20. Believe it or not, I couldn't find those on the cheap. I guess it goes in cycles. I ended up letting Precision match the 14 to the rest of my kit. I ended up with a jazzer, but not the natural wood version. So, I'm a little bit jeleous of yours. It's definitely looking sweet. Nice work.

Thanks Roger. I'll have final pics of the kit later next week. Waiting for some parts to show up to finish the 8x12, and the snare should be here by tuesday. The toms are the only ones that I had to veneer, the bass was already natual maple. Suprisingly the toms matched almost exactly!

So the breakdown goes like this: 8x12 3-ply mid 70's (?), 14x14 floor tom 3-ply either 1965 or 1966 (according to the badge's serial number anyway), 15x18 bass HSS era Artist Custom 5-ply from 1992. Snare is an 8-lug Gene Krupa COB sound king from 1963. Shell has no lines and I'm told it was a one year only deal like that, so I think it's pretty rare. Should make for a nice sonic combo as well as a sharp looking kit. :D

Ok guys.....here's the finished product. Now, please......no flack about the Yamaha mount. It seemed to be the best solution to make the two eras of drum mounts work together. Besides, the 8x12 will never be worth a whole lot now, since it is technically a "re-wrap", and it already had extra holes in the shell to begin with. Yes, I did fill those, but I also ended up filling the 4 holes for the set-o-matic mount as well (not the large center hole, I made sure that worked for the Yamaha mount. Clever ain't I? :D )

Now, not only do they look good, but they sound great too! Excited

OK these are the shots I was asking about in your other thread. Nice work. As long as you're not going all original parts I think the Yamaha tom mounts are the best choice. Well done.

Ok...now I'm only asking this just out of curiosity. I have no plans on asking then posting to ebay within minutes....:p

I know how much I have invested in these drums to make up this kit, but curious as to what it would be worth on the open market. Drums only, no stands, hardware, cymbals etc.

You guys know what they are because I've shown the work and the finished product, but what would be a FAIR value? (this means I am asking for an actual ballpark someone would be willing to pay, not the "I'll give you $100 for them!" trying to be funny answers.) Thanks in advance to any valid responses. :D

You know that is a tough one. Vintage Slingerland kits in good condition don't seem to bring any bucks! I would say that kit would start at around $400 although it is worth more.

Even with the be-bop sizes? Those seem to be in demand in any brand right now. I think I've only ever seen one or two Slingy kits with the 18" bass......you'd think that would help it a bit more in the $$ department.....hmmm
