Slingerland assembly question.?

I purchased an old set of Slingerland drums at a yard sale. I am not a drummer but I thought my son might have fun learning to play them.

I have taken them all a part and polished up all the metal, got some new/used parts online and have begun putting them back together. I have identified the finish to be green (aqua) satin flame, everything I read says it is very easily scratched and damaged.

My first question: is there supposed to be any kind of gasket type material between the metal parts, lugs, tom mount, etc. and the drum wrap itself?

The drums were filthy and cost very little but they have cleaned up really nice and I don't want to damage the finish through my ignorance.

My second question: there is a piece of rubber hose type material that slides on the tom mount between the tom drums (I believe this is orginal equipment) is there a specific recommended replacement material for this rubber piece?

Thanks for any knowledge you can share with me.Help

There were no gaskets between the lugs and mounts and the shells.

That rubber thing between the two mounted toms is probably correct. I'm assuming it's the tom mount with the two tom clips held together by a ratchet thing. Those rubber pieces were usually lost, so anything you can come up with as a substitute would be fine.

I've heard "scrubbing bubbles" works well on cleaning satin flames.

Thanks...

Yeah... it is the early clip style mounts, without the rubber piece the toms hang at a wierd outward angle. Bass drum is stamped '66. Set is 12-12-16-20 I think it is called a 2R kit.

It has a mismatched '59 or '60 (closed S) badged snare in WMP. One big Zildjain, one smaller Krut, and some Camber high hats. Flat bottom snare stand is decent, the cymbal stands and high hat are shot. All the bottom lugs and heads where pulled. But I only gave $25.00 for the whole dirty mess so I'm not complaining.

I have seen some Gretch stuff advertised with a felt piece behind the diamond shape tom attached mount. Do you know if Slingerland used felt behind the tom mounts on their drums?

Something to clean way down in the ridges in that satin flame wrap would be nice. I windexed them and they looked 150% better but not 100% clean. I'll give scrubbing bubbles a try.

Hi,

Not a Slingy expert, just old. Gaskets were not in common use under lugs, brackets etc back in the early 60's. Not sure which company put them on first or when-- 80's perhaps?

You may want to look at the Slingerland catalogues at Drum Archive (a wonderful resource):

Jim,

I used a solution of dish soap and oxyclean to clean satin flame wrap. You can use a brush of some type to get in the grooves. Make sure it is soft though. That did a really good job on my kit.

I put a picture of the kit "basement dwelling slings" in the drum image gallery. I also put a picture of what they looked like when I got them home from the yard sale in the thread associated with the picture of the kit.

I still have several things I want to make right on them.. so next time they are apart they will get another sponge bath.

Thanks for the cleaning solution tips... the wrap is a little rough but it has a great vintage look!

What's the general trend when cleaning up an old set. Should I put new top heads on this kit or leave the orginal Slingerland heads.

Original heads seem fine but they don't look very nice. I had to put the new bottom heads on but they really show how old the original batters are.
