Slingerland 20" Kick Drum

I would appreciate any advice I could get in selecting a 3 ply shell to refurbish. I've wanted a 20" kick for a while but a custom drum starts around 8 or $900. I would like to keep the drum under 3 or $400 between the shell and parts. I don't know much about vintage drums but I'm sure some of the members can tell from the pics if any of the following shells are worth picking up. I will have the bearing edges re-cut if need be and perhaps a new wrap. Take a look at the links below. The aged marine pearl has some ply separation. My inclination is to get the bare mahogany shell but the blue wrap looks like it is in decent shape. Keep in mind I'm not trying to impress anyone with all original parts. I just want a playable drum for gigging and recording in this size and ply configuration. Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd go with the last one. Bare shell, perfect price. The mahogany shell is priced too high with all the extra holes in it ( in my opinion ) and the others are in good shape and should be left alone. The last one is prime candidate. My one thing is this, before you even decide to re-cut the edges play the bass as it is. Slingerlands sounds awesome, and if the edges are clean this drum will not disappoint you.

Thanks for the warm welcome Mr. Angel, and yes of course I wouldn't touch the edges if they were in good shape. Any reason to stay away from the others if I leave them intact. I would of course need to secure some hoops and claws.

Oh, yeah do you think the last one is maple/poplar?

Maple yes, I don't recall if Slingerland ever used Poplar. If you leave them as they are and you dig the color I'd go for it. I was thinking along the lines of any alterations for hardware would be easier on a stripped down drum. But any of them is fine honestly.
