Slingerland 1965-66 Black Diamond finish set appraisal

Loading...

Hey everyone,

I have had this 1965/66 Slingerland kit for about 15 years. I bought it at a used gear shop and when I bought it they told me it belonged to the drummer for Bill Haley and the Comets (lord knows if that's true). Well, I upgraded to a newer Gretsch set this Spring and now the wife and I just bought our first house. I was going to keep this for either a gigging or home set, but we could use some extra cash! It definitely could use a little TLC, but overall I think it's in pretty good shape for it's age.

I couldn't really find any comps online, so I was just wondering if any of you could give me a ballpark range of what the kit may be worth. I really appreciate it, thanks!

Details:

Bass Drum: 22X16 (badge with serial #85787, stamped JAN 66) has some wear and tear on the wooden hoops

Floor Tom: 16X16 (stamped JUN 66) clean

Tom: 12X8 (stamped MAY 66) clean

Welcome to the forum!

The kit looks in overall good shape. There appears to be something covering the tom holder tongue that fits into the diamond plate on the rack tom. Why is it there? The bass drum is actually 14x22. Are you certain that the rack tom is an 8x12 and not a 9x13?

Now, all that aside, I would put a realistic price of $750 - $900, given the economy and the lower prices that Slingerland drums seem to command. Let's see what others have to say.

Two months ago, I sold my 1966 Slingerland set (14x22--9x13--16x16--matching six lug snare) for $1100 on eBay in less than one week. The drums were in pristine original condition. Had these drums been Black Diamond Pearl, I think that the price would have been the same if they were in as nice condition as the Red drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I think $800 is very realistic. Even a photo of Bill Haley's drummer playing a BDP Slingerland doesn't make it that one, so it's just "a story". Many of us here at the forum regret selling set's like that one later on. Don't let it go for cheap.
