Slingerland 14x20 inch bass drum questions

Loading...

Hey Guys,

So I'm pretty new to vintage drums. I'm not a big drum gearhead, and I'm only 19.

So about a year ago I went to a friends house to jam, and the kit he had over there was pretty tossed together. Groove percussion cymbals, a busted snare drum as a rack tom and a 20 inch rogers bass drum that I fell in love with.

So now I just picked up this Slingerland 14x20" bass drum on ebay and am looking to build a kit around it. I of course wasn't around when Slingerland drums were in production, so I know very little about drum hardware from that era.

The drum is missing its legs, but the hardware is all intact. Can you tell what I will need as a replacement based on these pictures. Also included was a tom mount shaft. I was wondering if there was a way for me to mount a cymbal or rack tom on the drum, as that is the way my friend's Rogers Bass drum is set up.

Also can you guys tell me this drum's origin based on a serial number?

I'm not in a big hurry to mount anything on it right now. I'll probably just get a batter head and second hoop for it, and set it up as a 4 piece with the rack tom on a snare stand.

Cool,

So are spurs universal? I haven't actually picked it up yet. These are ebay pictures.

Hi - Nice pick up. That drum was manufactured sometime between 62-70, based on the badge. I had some trouble making out the serial number from the picture, but you can find a serial number time by following the Slingerland drums link under the "vintage drum identification" heading at the top of this site. Lots of good info there.

I'm not sure if that tom mount is factory or not, but someone else here may have a better idea. If its not factory, you could pick up a Slingerland mount on ebay or someone might have one available here. You could also pick up one of the vintage repro mounts from Steve Maxwell. Anyway, just double check that before doing anything drastic :). You'll be really happy with the thump that little bass drum can put out. I've got one with coated ambassadors on the reso and batter sides... sounds really nice.

Good luck and have fun with that one!

That is the correct tom mount. It's for a double rack tom.

From the 1965 catalog

If I remember right the the spurs were 5/16" thickness.

1970's were 3/8"
