Should I put something on my edges?

Loading...

Thanks for all the suggestions (as I suppose it's somewhat of a personal preference). I really appreciate it.

I tried her out last night as is; she sounds very interesting to me (in a good way). But then again, I'm used to playing metallic snares mostly so far.

I always find this hard to describe, but I feel she sounds big, and not (too) sharp. She is very sensitive, which makes me more comfortable about my snare beds. I like this sensitivity.

I didn't have any trouble tuning her, so that's real nice.

Warm, I suppose, but I'm not sure that's the right word. But anyway, I think the edges are good. I will sand them a bit smoother today, I think.

I could experiment with different heads and wires, but I think I'll leave them as is for now.

I'm going to try and finish her up this week so I can use her for a gig next week. She looks really cool with the bare Mahogany, but I need to put something on there so she won't get dark spots from sweaty fingers or moist or whatever. Protection, you know. This week hopefully, but not rushing anything... Rushing is hardly ever a good idea, at least not for me :D.

To get back on-topic for just a few seconds:

With time, I might end up putting some wax on the edges.

I'm confident enough to add pictures now :P

(Those hoops are from a crappy Pearl Export donor snare for now, and the rods are from... ???)

(It still needs some sanding to even out the "color" of the Mahogany, it's sort of uneven now, as you might see)

(What might look like notches in the edge is just the grain of the middle (thick!) ply)

Oh right... Overall, I'm very pleased with the results so far, this being a first timer for me (plus, I have hardly made any expenses on this entire snare ^^).

I guess it's not going to look/sound exactly like the original (I don't know for sure). I'm sorry if that upsets anyone. It just had edges and a finish which were in too bad a shape to not "fix" imo.

Thanks again!

There is a product called Glide available. It's touted as an edge wax (among other things) and is sold by several online drum vendors. It's mostly beeswax and works brilliantly.
