Should I Add Second Tom? Or Keep The Classic 4-pc?

Loading...

Ok so here is my drum set.

Take notice that I only have one tom. It's a classic 4-pc set. I have a holder in the bass for the tom. Should I get a double holder and add a second tom?

example of double holder:

Will this ruin the "classic vintage look" of my drums? Or is this a good thing?

*Reason for wanting other tom: more drum fills

If you think I should add second tom... what is the difference between toms(in sound)? I would not like to get a tom that sounds the same as my current one haha.

Why? Just wondering because I VERY rarely use floor toms. And I want the other tom for drum fills.

What's that quote? 'If you cant be creative with 4 drums, what are you going to do with more?'

In my opinion, some of the best drummers, some of the most creative and interesting drummers of all time used 4 piece sets. Max Roach, Tom Morello, Art Blakey, (earlier) Elvin Jones... the bebop guys played more, and more creative stuff than all the metal guys with the huge sets (and I'm someone that appreciates metal.)

Buddy Rich played a 5 piece, but I heard he just used that extra drum to set his towel on.

I dont know... you're what? 16? Do whatever inspires you. I can tell by your recent posts you've been bitten by the gear bug. I'm sorry to say, it's a chronic condition. For whatever it's worth, try to be happy with less. This site is full of guys that have played 30-40 years of drum equipment just to come full circle and try to get back to what they played as teenagers. Most likely, the set you should be playing is the one already in your bedroom.

The gear bug indeed - not only is it chronic, but in many cases it's terminal LoLoLoLo

My Slingy/Luddy is (was) are a "classic 4 piece", although I've added some toms for probably weird reasons [i'll tell ya later;)]

One thing I did before adding my 10" & 13" toms was apparently a move against the standard method; but I wanted to do MORE TOM FILLS! darn it!

So I put my 12" on the right side of my kick, next to my floor tom and raised up my floor pretty high. btw - my 12" is on a separate stand, not attached to my kick.

I've yet to see other folks who do this, but it worked for my tom fill jones :D

...but when he played on his drum, he made the stars explode....

WOW! That quote 'If you cant be creative with 4 drums, what are you going to do with more?' makes so much sense! I should really wait awhile and see how it goes. If I do end up adding a tom... I think I'll put it on its own stand at least so I won't hurt the appeal and value of the kit from a collector's standpoint. Also just out of pure respect for the kit. I'll take some time to think about it for sure and I'll be sure not to rush. This 'bug' you guys speak of is pretty crazy haha.

I think one problem I have is that I look up to Neil Peart. And his set is... um... pretty big Laughing H I REALLY have to start doing research and read up on different the drummers that all of you guys are telling me about with small drum sets. I know Neil Peart, Phil Collins and Buddy Rich. That's about it. Because the problem with me being 16 (in 2 months) and growing up in the 21st century is everyone listens to rap and techno BLEH! Rap and techno is NOT MUSIC, it's NOISE to me. [sorry to anyone if they like any of that stuff]. So it's not like I have friends saying "have you ever heard this drummer before?" It's hard to discover new drummers and music.

I'm really glad I joined this forum. I am going to learn so much. You guys are REALLY boosting my interest in drums. And are saving me from making mistakes.

By the way everyone just to let you guys know... I don't listen to modern rock. I find it kind of bland. I listen to legends! Such as...

AC/DC

Aerosmith

Job Bon Jovi

Genesis

Joe Pass

John Lee Hooker

Led Zeppelin

Little Milton

Little Richard

Little Walter

Phil Collins

Rush

ZZ Top

There's more but these are my favorites.

I see nothing wrong with adding another tom if you feel comfortable with that set up. Different sized drums do make different sounds. ;)

My favorite player is Danny Seraphine; he plays two rack toms and THREE floor toms! The rack toms are on a stand to the left of the bass drum, and the floors are in a tri-tom configuration. Using more toms adds tonal variety. Listen to Hal Blaine playing his monster kit. However, you can play anything on two toms using dynamics and good musical taste. It's fun to roll around the toms; a good drummer learns to restrain the urge to do so until it fits within the music. Using fewer toms helps to develop that necessary restraint. Less is more; I once saw Steve Smith play for about 15 minutes using only one hand.
