I signed up to shopgoodwill.com and happily bid on a drum and won it. It is an Apollo snare drum - I paid $78 for it.
I live in Canada and the shipping was $50. A little high I thought but I paid it. Goodwill uses UPS - a private service. When goods travel from the USA to Canada - as in this case - UPS charges a fee - a brokerage fee. The fee is based on the value of the item - in the case of my $78 drum the fee is $42! That's 54% of the drum cost! So I am paying $100 just to get this $78 drum to me.
To add to this.....there was no one home today to receive the package and pay the fee so UPS left a note stating they will try again tomorrow. Well....I work....and I'm not about to take a day off work just to be here for the package. I called the "1800" # and they will call me on my cell phone and let me know if and where to pick my package up. I mean why don't they just leave a note stating "you can pick your package up at such and such a location at this time?" The regular mail service does and it works great.
That is the last time I will ever buy anything that uses UPS for a mailing service. I sent shopgoodwill an email to them know that.
It's not totally the high brokerage fee that I'm complaining about here, that's bad enough but I can live with it - it's that they assume I will take time off work to wait here all day to pay them for my package......freaking unreal:mad:
