Drums sound great. That snare is saying something! May try to hunt one down or at least a Sound King and save $100. The Zoomatic ain't my thing, but maybe another strainer will fit that hole pattern.
Shelley Manne Leedy COB Snares?
Great sound, all of them. I like the sound of your cymbals, there oldschool warm but still have good brightness to them, and I reckon that snare is everything if not more than a supra phonic.?
I still love my supraphonic more. Of course it's been with me for a long time now.
I've always felt the Slingerland's throwoff was bad. The Broadway strainer works better but still not the same as ludwig's p-83
That irv cotter model would be the one to get.
And just to throw this out there, does the look of sticksaver hoops with the leedy lug casings bother anyone else?
Slingerlands lugs look great with the stick savers, they both have that rounded 1950's automobile styling.
I always though the leedy lugs would look great with a die cast hard edged hoop. Or at least the original flat hoops with clips.

I think that having the mix of the leedy lugs with the slingerland stickaver hoops should be in vogue because the two company's were connected at this time? So that would be cool. If it's sound your thinking about- die-cast hoops would dry out or focus the sound while the chrome over brass stick savers would have their own sound, more open? Die casts are die casts but the sticksavers have a fantastic reputation and I can definately vouch for this. I would go as far as to say they are the best I've had/ played. I'm not bringing the stick choppers into the equasion as they are a great in there own way.:2Cents:
I guess what I'm getting at is the styling. Yes, cob sticksavers are great. When I "restored" my kit I made sure to replace the missing hoops with original brass to match the existing ones.
It just irks me when drum companies have a design going and stray from it when it comes to the other hardware on the drums.
For instance Camco had a turret design bracket for cymbal holders that matched the lugs and could gave been used for the floortom leg brackets instead of the rectangular blocks. (Not even going to talk about the triangle bass drum mount.)
I think because of the leedy&ludwig and the Slingerleedy company swaps/buyouts Leedy never got a modern hoop and tom bracket that stayed with the Art Deco lug design. They just got slingerland parts.
They just plain do not match.

I must admit I don't know much about leedy drums but I'm interested and want to learn more and am hoping other people will carry on in this thread . I'm very particularly interested in snare drum lore. Cool1
Anyway, at the end of the day they are what they are. These ARE vintage drums designs.
The Leedy drums made and sold by Slingerland came from the factory with the beautiful Leedy deco lugs and the Stick Saver hoops. That combination looks great to me. Die cast hoops on the drum make it sound boxy to my ears.
So leedy really never got to have their own style of castings for tom holders and leg brackets, they were big in the time of stamped and bent hardware. So the sets have more of a utilitarian look about them. I would have loved to see what they could have evolved into.
I just love the lug design, it looks like a neon theater marquee.
Just wish the design was carried over into more aspects of the drums.
The drums are still beautiful, just cut off before their time.

I bought this a couple of weeks ago on eBay. It was listed for $9.99 with the following text:
"I believe this to be an old Leedy twin bolt L arm holder. I used it as a leg holder on a floor tom until I found the correct one. It is clean and shinny and has no flaws. It could be the part you need to finish your restoration.......".
I don't remember seeing this design piece of hardware for Slingerland or SlingerLeedy. My guess is that it came on some MIJ Slingy copy. The mounting holes match up to the holes for the Slingerland cymbal L-arm fixture (example pictured) that is on my Leedy bass drum. I may just try it on this drum to see how it looks. The two wing bolts should hold the L-arm better than the single wing bolt on the Slingerland piece that came on the drum. Opinions anybody?
