Sharing Some Drumming Fun Last viewed: 1 hour ago

[quote=Purdie Shuffle;1767mer in a Blues band, Blues is all about feeling/groove and tasty playing. I want to give some props to one of my hero's, Tommy Wells, who is, for my money, the most talented working Blues drummer in the business. Tommy plays a lot of session work, all kinds of music, but nobody can touch him when it comes to the Blues. Always knows what to play and where to put it. As solid as drummers come.

Is this the same Tommy Wells that is/was on DFO? I see his name there in the "pro advice Q" section but seems not many of those guys post anymore.

Yes, Tommy is a member at DFO. Don't know how much time he spends there these days. I got to know him and chew the fat with him several times over the years. Tommy is not only an Ace drummer, but a great guy who is very open and engaging.

I double-dog-dare any drummer to listen to just one cut from Tommy's Blues band (The Prisoners Of Love) and not walk away deeply impressed with his playing ability, style and approach to the music. I don't say it lightly when I call Tommy one of the BEST Blues drummers I have ever listened to.

Just listening to and studying the musical choices Tommy makes of which groove or lick to play and when to play it, is a Master Class for drummers. No BS, this guy is a solid pro. Everyone should spend some time listening to Tom. Great, gifted musician.

I'll post up some more stuff for you later...

I've spent the better part of the last year working on the kind of stuff you'll see/hear in this next lesson. I mentioned that I've been studying guys like, Johnny Vidocovich and Stanton Moore -a lot- lately. This next video lesson will clearly demonstrate what it is that got me hooked.

If you're like me, after seeing this video... you're about to spend the next several months getting this stuff down.

Enjoy, it's hard but very gratifying when you finally nail it.

Practice, practice, practice... and then practice some more.

John all these things we keep me busy for the next several years. LOL. Good stuff though thanks for posting.

I looked up Tommy Wells but couldn't find any vids with TPOL. I did find a few where he plays in a blues trio that were excellent. Maybe I tunes?

Stanton came over to my house around 4 years ago while here with Galactic ,and was really tearing it up on a Slingerland kit I had at the time in my basement..

Then,he hooked me and a friend up last summer for a 3 day HippieFest they were playing in Mich.

Hooked us up for all 3 days!

We got to go on stage with him an hour or so before he played, and he was showing us some "hip drum sheet"

Even got us beers after their set!

Great drummer/guy!Mallet Player2

He's lucky he hasn't run into me... I'd bend his ear real good! I've been absorbing everything I can find from Stanton and a few other guys. But all the stuff I've gotten from Stanton has been the most fun to learn. It has the most practical applications and all of it just sounds killer. Stanton's grooves make the kit sound like there's an entire drum corp. coming down the street. It all just swings real hard. I'm loving it and I've learned a ton from him. Actually, if I ever crossed paths with him, I'd likely just thank him profusely.

My concept is; If you're going to steal grooves and licks, steal them from the best. Stanton is certainly 'The Best' when it comes to that 'Nee-awlins' style. Next time you see him, tell him he's got a lot of drummers sweating out here! :D

John

PS - Blair, I've been dying to ask the guy... Stanton gets the best sounding buzz's out of the snare drum. I'm wondering if he's 'pinching them out' (pinching the fulcrum to get the pressure needed,) or if he's going the other way and relaxing the fulcrum. I get great buzz 'rolls', but getting good sounding buzzed single strokes (especially playing 16ths,) takes a bit of control. I'd love to talk to that guy... I'd pick his brain clean.
