No idea, but it sure is cool! Have you looked on the inside for any kind of makers mark?

Are the hoops made of plies of wood or are they solid?

O-Lugs! i only looked by the vent holes yet, and from the angle i did't saw any mark, all i can say is,the wood inside that shell looks like poplar. The hoops are made of plies inner and outher is mahogany

No idea of the shell, but I can tell you as a retired DeadHead, the strap is most likely from a former hippie owner of the drum and he seemingly tucked an animal head so that he could play this as a hand drum.

Just an observation as to why it would have the deer hide on it, if that is deer hide. Doesn't look like goat from the color, it really looks like deer.

Well, of course, the plywood hoops imply that they are not so very old. The stain job on the shell doesn't seem to be professionally done, either.

It would be interesting to see the shell construction method, but I don't blame you for not wanting to disassemble the drum.

It could be some kind of drum used in those medieval festivals or something like that.

I really don't know what it is.

What provenance can you give us? Where was it purchased?

the drum is nice but it's in the way of the great view off your back deck!

I know it's an old post, just wanted to finalize it..

*O-lugs* the drum is not mine and the owner dont really like the idea of taking it apart to look inside(that's his, and i too respect that)

There is a little crack on the bottom head and by there i was able to see a small mark inside that says "Sole".

As far as the provenance, he said a friend gave it to him 30something years ago.

That's all i know.

*jonnistix* yes the top head is deer, and the driedout bottom head is sheep skin ,the drum tone is very warm

but dont project much ,the heads could be tighten a little, anyways, when played outside, beside the fire... everybody

loves it.

*rynosaurus* sorry about that, next time i'll try to do better, he! he! he!

Thanks and Cheers.
