Sept 24 1963 Ludwig Snare Drum

Loading...

Just got this all original Ludwig pre serial 6.5x14. I'm thrilled with the condition and sound. I'll be using it this weekend for the first time on some gigs .

My question, it's the Mahogany finish but what are the other plies? There are three correct?

Thanks.

Yes sir, 3 plies. Because it was 1963, I'm betting that the inner ply was Mahogany, although nothing is set in stone. The outside ply is maple though, they used it for lacquer finishes. And the inner ply, as always, poplar.

So you gotta nice maple-poplar-mahogany combo, and a nice snare altogether. Hold on to that one.

Thanks for the info Michael. So it's the maple outer ply we're seeing, and I'm assuming maple re-rings as well. Funny because it was adverized by the seller as a Ludwig Mahogany. Maybe I'm wrong but I could have read that in a Ludwig catalog as well. No matter...I'm lovin' the drum so far.

Here's another one that I'm wondering about the ply construction. A WFL 5 (or 5.5) x14. The finish which I think was a paint was removed and the drum now has no finish on the outside or inside. Maybe a thin clear coat on the inside (original perhaps). Original NOB hardware. I'm thinking I'd try a tasteful re-finish. I need to take a good look at the inside first. Am I right that there are many more of these around than the 6.5 versions?

That sure looks like mahogany. Hard to tell because of the angle of the pic. Great looking drum.
