Seeking Helpful Californian - Purchase And Ship Glass Glitter

Loading...

Long shot, but thought I'd give it a go...

SaveOnCrafts in California has the best price on Silver German Glass Glitter, which I want to use for making some DIY drum wrap. Unfortunately they use only UPS for shipping to Canada, and it's too much.

I'm looking for a helpful Californian to take delivery of a one pound bag of this stuff and relay it to me, via USPS. Of course I will pay for everything and throw in a $10.00 fee if requested.

I'm awaiting an email from SOC regarding the grit of the glitter they have in stock...because of course they list measurements in millimeters while the glitter is designated by grit, *not* millimeters, par for the course.

The grits available are 70, 80, 90, and 100. I'm looking for 80 grit. If they have it and anyone responds to this request we can move forward from there.

Alternatively, if anyone knows anywhere else to get this stuff for a comparable price [doubt it], please let me know....it's made by a small family business in a small village in Germany, about which no details or info are available anywhere.

Why am I constantly looking for stuff which is near impossible to get in any reasonable way? Because I live in Canada, where there is nothing, that's why. :)

Thanks guys. Pm replied to Creighton...

We used to have a really cool '79 Grand Prix, loved that car and nothing wrong with it, but insurance killed that....kinda reminds me of shipping costs lol. But yeah it would be super awesome to road trip to Buffalo.....

Y'know I called Michaels [crafts] in Toronto about this. The saleswoman told me it was "too specialized" for them to carry - BS! They have the Martha Stewart dust, and other types of glitter, and every blog I looked at while researching this had folks gushing about how the German Glass is the best stuff out there.........so stock it already! :)

Here's the deal - it's $16.00 US for a 1lb bag at SOC; $30 to $45 everywhere else. Or you can get 1 to 4 oz bottles for around $5 [not SOC]. So that's great right? But since they use UPS, the total layout is $58 and change. That's 58 US dollars, so, close to $70 CDN. We've had great experiences with USPS, is there something I'm missing as to why in the heck any American business wouldn't use USPS? Even when the customer requests it?

Think it boils down to lazy. Takes 1 minute to fill out the customs form. Then you must go to the post office. If I didn't ship cross border/oversea's revenue would take a 40 percent hit. Funny, Canada customs is slower than most east bloc countries.

It's the cold, don't ya know eh? It's cooold.

I should point out that SOC does use USPS, not for Canada though. Sorry about the rant either way; I get fixated on sourcing something and start to get that "you can't get there from here" feeling lol

I did not hear back from SaveOnCrafts about the grit they have. So, I went ahead and called Meyer Imports - they have every colour and every grit available from the manufacturer. I ordered 1lb of 80 grit for $33.95, which is twice the price of SOC, but the shipping, after I joined as a retailer [we run a small business transferring 8mm & 16mm to digital], was $7 and change.

So the total, $41.00 and change, was only $18.00 less than with SOC, but with the [very important to me] difference that the bulk of the money *went to the folks providing the product*, not shipping.

Can't wait to get this stuff! Check the photo out, it's gorgeous stuff. I'll be going for a look very close to "Vintage Nickel Sparkle", which to my eyes is just jaw-dropping awesome.

Abso - Lootely Jeff! :)

This time I will post a step-by-step pictorial tutorial. I'm looking forward to trying tint in the acrylic gel medium to get a ginger-aled look. Although the Dura Lar does come in tinted sheets as well, the stuff right up the street is clear so that's what I'm using. I have lots of leftover Dura Lar scraps to play with, gonna get it just right this time.

One of the things I love about this particular glitter is that it is real silver and will tarnish over time.
