Does anyone know who made the drums for the large catalog companies in the 50s? I mean, before the Japanese companies came into the act.

We are pretty sure Pearl and Star (TAMA) started building stencils in the 50s and started selling to the distributors here. These distributors then put whatever name they wanted on these shells and sold them to the drum and music stores under many names. My best line says the big boys saw this and jumped in the pond right away. The shells are the only real clue we have as to when the Japanese drums started to be dominant in the big chains. As far as if Lud/Sling/Gretsch/Kent/Liberty et. al. and etc.( I know) was badging and at what point this ended is a great new story for us beat our heads against the wall over. I've heard rumors that Kent were making drums for one of the big retailers (Montgomery Ward perhaps), but I can't prove it.
