Satin Flame wrap cleaning

Loading...

Hi all

So my first kit in a satin flame needs some TLC.

Whats the best way to bring the wrap back & shine it up?

Will Novus work?

I'm wiping down with warm soapy cloth first.

These drums were in a storage trailer for decades and are DIRTY.

Thanks!

Hi Mark!

Yep...the first step is a "warm soapy cloth"! This is exactly how I cleaned my Cusatis 4N kit back in 2002. I wish I kept that kit! For any tough grime, I use a soft bristle tooth brush. Yes, took some time, but worked great. The satin finishes scratch easily, so use a microfiber towel to dry them off and you'll be good to go. Novus is not recommended for satin flame finishes.

Here's my kit...complete with the catalog page!

Marks x 2

thanks for the great info and starting this thread.

I have a few satin finish snares that I have been holding off on doing any refurbishment or clean up to as I wasn't sure on the best way to clean them. For "regular" wraps I typically apply a coat of carnauba wax to help protect the finish. Any recommendations to help preserve this wrap the help keep it from cracking, etc?

Michael

Yes, it was a beauty! Correct, no Novus for SF finishes. And, I'm not aware of any commercially available cleaners for SF. You've probably felt the textured surface, right? It's that texturing that can hold and trap dust, dirt, grime, etc. Careful cleaning with a mild dish soap, such as Dawn, is all you need. You don't need much! You'll also need that soft bristled toothbrush to get out any tough grime. Once clean, you can keep it that way with a micro-fiber towel.

To answer the previous question, there's not much you can do to keep the wrap from cracking. If it has yet cracked around the lugs, just be sure the lug screws are not too tight. It's the pressure of any hardware against the wrap that causes it to crack.

Forgot about this snare drum in my collection! It's a Slinger-Leedy Frank Capp model, wrapped in original Green Satin Flame. The first picture shows how dirty the wrap was, which you can really see around the panel with the badge. The second picture is with the wrapped cleaned and all hardware detailed. Yes, I used a soft cloth with a few drops of dawn in a pot of warm water.

Scrubbing Bubbles works well. Damp sponge wipe down. As mentioned, soft bristle brush for hard dirt.

LOVE that snare!

Wow that came out great!

That may be a close match to my W&A kit!
