Royal Star 1414 floor tom

A friend recently gave me this floor tom. I know I took some photos of it when it arrived and after I took the black paint finish (not factory) off, but I can't find them anywhere..........lost in the black hole of photos on my pc. The drum was painted black before my friend received it.

I removed the wrap - see photo - after removing the black paint.....the badge was even painted black!

I sanded and painted it and it's one nice little tom. The Asian Mahogany (Laun?) vertical grained wood is in good shape. The V shaped ply piece was going to leave a line anyway so I stained that and painted the rest and put a couple coats of Wipe-On-Poly over the lot.

The drum has tones of tone with the used coated WeatherKing batter and Clear Gretsch 2ply reso. I did tweak the edges but was very careful to keep to the 'original intensions.'

WHAT?!?!?! You mean the different color(s) on the outer play is in fact a missing outer ply? You didn't want to try to fix the 'line' by filling it or something (as opposed to add piece of outer ply - as strange as that sounds.)

That looks really strange and would be hard to match (do the other drums - that you intend on matching this with - look that way as well?

Very strange - and my guess is that alot of people are confused by this.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Haha - don't mean to confuse anyone.

The outer ply has the dark V so I decided to go with it. It's just a fun project and I wanted to see how it would turn out and I like it. It's kind of like a Harlaquin paint job.

Anyway....if I tire of it I can always wrap it or take the finish off and do a complete one-colour paint job....no problem.

The original wrap would have been next to impossible to put back on the drum and it has some splits and tears as well. So the vintage value as a Factory finished drum is not there. There are no extra holes in the drum and I think all the parts are original except the two rubber tips I put on the legs.

I was thinking if I ever come across an abused (finish gone) Royal Star bass drum and rack tom I may be able to duplicate this finish.......and find a metal shelled Royal Star snare drum to boot.

In the end.....I don't think the drum has not been 'abused' in my care and it sounds very good........I like it.

looks pretty good to me. a whole kit finished like that would be unique.

Thanks guys - it was a fun project.

I didn't get any paint or stain on my James Last Christmas album here. That is actually my favourite Christmas LP.....I should take better care of it.
