Rough marks in RK shell

Can anyone explain what these marks in the wood are in my 40s radio king snare? When you look close (easier to see in real life) it sort of looks like they have vertical straight knife marks, and then this roughness around it. [Attachment: 94034]

It's sort of nearly all the way round but not quite here's another[Attachment: 94037]. I wish I could get all 4 pics that I took on here this is another bad spot. The wood to me does generally look ok, but I'm no expert

They look like marks made by the infeed roller on the planer when the wood was prepared. My guess is what we are seeing is low spots that the knives didn't clean up. Should have had one more pass through the planer before it was steamed up and bent.

I've got an early 60's single ply Artist model that had the wrap removed and spray painted black. The exterior has the grooves from where they turned it on the lath to bring the exterior dimension into round.

Wow thanks for this interesting insight, so it was a factory thing. If only they knew back then how this would fascinate someone like me.
