Rough looking mid-70's Ludwig Supra cleaning

Loading...

I recently bought an early to mid-70's Ludwig kit that came with a Supra. Everything looked good except for the snare. It is spotted with rust and occasionally some chrome is missing.

What's the best way to clean up this state of Supra?

I'll post pics as soon as I can get on something sans an iPhone.

Post some pics for the experts to chime in. It might not be that bad. It might just need some TLC. If it's really bad, it might qualify for the "fishwaltz" Glitter Blast Method.

I've have great success with Flitz Metal Polish and a lot of elbow grease. Check out some of my posts for before and after pics of a Supra and Super-sensitive I cleaned up.

You need to do some searching here on the VDF. You'll find lots of discussion and suggestions from just cleaning to sand blasting and powder coating.

Check out the threads listed below.

Aluminum is one of the most reflective metals - Purdie blasted and polished his Supra to a high relection - it turned out awesome. Also at the end of the thread JD15 did a real nice treatment as well putting a swirl pattern on his shell then doing a transparent red lacquer over it.

Drumguy60 "de-chromed" and did a light polsih on his shell...

jbones1 did some sandblasting and painting...

Thanks for the help guys. I honestly need to do my VDF stuff on a computer but the iPhone seems so convenient. Lol.

I'm honestly thinking about doing nothing to it. It's a great sounding drum and the apparence isnt that big of a deal. It's a player's snare and will see at least a bar a weekend.

Has anyone seem Ludwig's new "road worn"-esque snare? They have it at drumsonsale.com. It's basically a worn out supra. Check it out. It's $1972 and it's exactly what I have. Lol.

That was a "one-day" special; look for more like it next year, same time.
