Rogers XP8 vs. Ludwig Combo II

Loading...

Hey guys, my first post here with just a quick question.

Two Options not sure which is a better buy if either.

Option 1: Rogers XP8 kit in white. 12, 13, 16, 22.

Option 2: Ludwig Combo II in Butcher Block 12, 13, 16, 22.

Both are the same asking price of $300. Is this good for either of those kits?

Both appear in pretty good condition. After researching the Luddy's it seems they are a bit unique in that they have real metal classic series lugs instead of the plastic squared standard series like lug, and they seem to be 6 ply instead of 3 ply because there are no re-rings as on the usual 3 ply shells.

I currently have a 71' Ludwig Big Beat kit so I'm kinda partial to the Ludwig brand, but not knowing much about Rogers I figured I should ask around because it might be an opportunity I shouldn't pass up. Then again maybe I should pass on both if the asking price isn't reasonable

Any help is much appreciated!

Cant "beat" a Ludwig......then YES you can! My money is on the Luddy, and a great price also!

Never played XP-8 kits, but people who have played them say they are some of the best sounding drums they've heard.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Sounds like an interesting Combo set, Ludwig was known for using what was around and handy, sometimes.

But, since you already have Luddies, get the Rogers. Different sound. Really nice shells. More "modern" then the Luddies, but still with a vintage feel. More of a punch, particularly the bass drum. You'll be glad you did! I've got both, and it's always hard to decide which goes to the gig........

I would take the Rogers over the Ludwigs. Neither have large selling prices on the open market, so it's back to sound and fit-n-finish ... which sounds better to your ears and which pleases your eyes more.

You know the Ludwig sound ... which you already own.

The Ludwig Combos in the Cortex finishes were single headed all the way around. If those are single headed drums ... that would be a no-brainer point.

There's no real choice here. Rogers XP8 is heads and shoulders a better kit than the 78-80 single headed cortex Combo kit. Let us know which you take and how you like it.

Well there may be a choice after all. I went today and looked at it and it wasn't quite as I expected. It is in good condition but, I don't think it's a XP8 anymore. It has re-rings and has grey shell interiors. The lugs and other hardware seem to be the same as what is on the XP8 in photos. Also, no badges except on bass drum. Might be a re-wrap. So as for now my choice is to hold off on either kit until I have more info.
