I know what you mean; that pipe is actually a reciever for the tom arm mount; it stays in the bass for support. I guess since the shells are pretty thin, they did that to offset the weight of the toms. A person could easily remove it though if they believe it's having an effect.
That being said, they still sound awesome.

Did the XP's not have the Rogers wing lug for the bass drum? I also notice that there is no badges on the front of the kit on the toms. I have a similar kit and the 12 tom badge points out front, but the 13 is opposite...Nice price too...

Some early production XP8 drums, 1979 production, had badges attached left or right of the mount. Sometime during that early production era, Rogers moved the Big R badge to 180 degrees opposite the mount. This practice continued through the end of production of USA made Rogers drums in 1984.
Second......... Removing the bass drum support post from any Big R era Rogers bass drum, 1975-1984, and using the bass drum to mount a single or double tom set up....... is bloddy insane, and will result in catastrophic disaster.
Believe it or not the set its still here waiting for its new owner...I might just keep it.
[COLOR="DarkRed"]A good price indeed - is the Dynasonic complete (with the undercarriage) ? Also - XP8's - I wouldn't call 'em 'thin' really. Personally - I disagree with the notion that XP8's are the 'cream of the crop' - I find those shells to be a significant step DOWN from their earlier re-ringed shells & edges. The XP8 shelled sets tend to go for less on market than a nicer Fullerton (early Fullerton), Dayton, or Cleveland. Not 'cuz they are a best-kept secret, but because they are more conventional - sounding than their predecessors. However by today's standards they are pretty good shells - and that set is surely worth more than what you are asking.[/COLOR]
Jaye: yes, the Dyna is complete. As a matter of fact the whole set got no missing parts...man, I still laugh with the responses to that guy who asked for the Rogers Sensodine snare drum....Laughing HLaughing H
