TommyP,
Here's a pic! Ive had the snare stored in a drum case for a few years. It could use some cleaning.
Cheers
I just got a 5x14" Super Ten today! It has BOTH a script logo and Big R badges. The seller told me that the drum was rebadged when Rogers got bought out. Weird, no?
Your seller is wrong.
Rogers swivo badges up to about 1976, when they changed over to Big R foil badges. Transition models have both badges. Chrome over steel shell.
Info here on both badges. Guess they used up the already scripted badge shells and just put the new badge on them as well.
All of the steel shell Big R SuperTen snare drums have the foil badge in the Oval Badge location, and they also have a Rogers script logo. Although I have yet to see a SuperTen steel shell with lug felts, (83-84), so it is possible they changed. The XP10 Maple Supertens have the Foil Badge in the Big R location and no script logo.
Okay, so I was wondering about this drum that I've had for a few years. I've never seen another one like it until lately, but it sounds as if it may either be a Superten or a Dynasonic from what I've heard. It's a maple shell, 8-ply I'm pretty sure, with a mahogany stain. I'm thinking it's a Dynasonic, due to what appears to be the "framing" on the bottom hoop, which appears to be the only difference between these two auctions:
Here's a pic of mine. What IS it? Thanks in advance:
The first link is a superten. The second is a Dynasonic. The seller in the second auction is drunk.
All of these drums are Ten Ply Keller Shells, All north american maple construction. I have both drums in the Eight inch size. I also have both drums in the 6.5 inch size, including two dynasonics with consecutive serial numbers. If you have a red stain dynasonic, I am thinking your foil badge is more square in shape, and does not have the Rogers Drums USA on it. If it does say USA, I would love to see pics, and might just try to trade you out of it. Its really hard to tell about your badge from the pic you posted. My first impression is that it is a Square Big R, without the USA. Which would make it an Island Music Import drum. The dampener style in your pic is not what I would expect on an Island Music Drum, and the stain is not from the Rogers USA period.
This is a 6.5 Superten, 10 ply, built on 1-26-83 for Gina Schock of the Go-Go's, signed inside by the production manager of Rogers Drums. (recently aquired on ebay, it got past everyone.)

Here are two late 83-84 6.5 inch Dynasonics, and an earlier, (82) 8 inch Dynasonic

I just looked, and it DOES have "USA" on the badge, and the corners are more rounded than squared. So, what does that mean? What distinguishing characteristic would make this a Dynasonic rather than a SuperTen?
USA on the badge puts your drum at 1982-1984 for manufacture. Asided from the Snare frame on the dynasonic, the primary difference between the superten and dynasonic was snare bed depth. Dynasonics were almost nil, while supertens were more pronounced, although still very shallow in comparison to other manufacturers snare drums. Yours is a dynasonic, it is missing the snare frame.
I would like to see more pics. I do not believe your finish is original, which really devalues the drum from a collectors standpoint, in my opinion. It is still a great sounding drum that plays very well.
