I have the Rob Cook book but can't seem to find the where he describes any specific information regarding the differences between a Holiday shell and Powertone shell? I know the hardware is different on a Luxor model though.

Are the Holiday models 3 ply and Powertones the later 5 plies?

Thanks much in advance Rogers 'nerds' :)

Not necessarily. I'm sure some Rogers aficionado more knowledgeable than me will chime in with specific timelines, but generally speaking Rogers went 5 ply in the early 60's (late 63-64) when they started using Beavertail lugs. I have Holiday drums 1964 with beavertails that are 3 ply so they didn't stop using the 3 ply immediately. Basically they used up what they had in the factory. I believe they were 5 ply Holiday models through 67- 68 which I think is when they changed the name to Powertone. I do know that Rogers went back to 3 ply (around 1970) for a while, and then back to 5 ply again. So, MOST Holiday model drums after around late 63-64 were 5 ply, but when they changed the name to Powertone they kept the same 5 ply shell make up until the short stint back to 3 ply in 70... then changed back to 5 ply again. I'm not 100 % certain when they changed the model name from Holiday, to Powertone. I think on toms and bass drums around 68 but again, someone will chime in with the exact year... Hope this helps and some Rogers guys will correct me if I have stated any incorrect information.

The snare beds are much deeper on a Holiday than a Powertone to account for the calf skin head stretching. It is noticable.

Holiday........

Snare drum.... discontinued in 1962 with the advent of the Powertone snare drum.

Holiday.......

Top line drum series name from late 50s through 1970ish.

Powertone.....

Name of Snare drum that replaced the Holiday SNARE Drum in 1962, introduced keller three ply MBM shell....... yes, it was birch for the inner ply on the three ply drums and Birch on the inner plies on the MBMBM five ply shells. Poplar is, was, and always has been, incorrect. Mr. Harry J Canganay Jr. brought us this wonderful information. Three ply changed over to five ply ...... 65ish or so. Five ply carried through into possibly late Dayton tags, and perhaps early Fullerton. 9/72 series drums are three ply according to the 1973 Catalog.

Power Tone, was the name change made to Holiday DRUMS around 1970. The snare drum Powertone also became POWER TONE at the same time. The POWER TONE SNARE DRUM was discontinued with the advent of the 9/72 drums and replaced by the SuperTen, a ten lug, Chrome over Steel shell available in 5x14 and 6.5x14 sizes. There were no wood SuperTen snare drums until 1981 with the advent of the XP10, ten ply, all American Rock maple shell.
