Rogers Red Onyx Pearl V.s. Slingy Red Tiger Pearl Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Based on what I've researched, Rogers' Red Onyx Pearl wrap was offered between 1964 and 1967 while Slingerland's Red Tiger Pearl wrap was only offered between 1970-1973. Despite the above, I've seen listings for Slingerland kits from the 60s advertised as having Red Tiger Pearl wraps. Can this be possible?

I've also got a few additional questions, if I may:

1. Is there actually a significant visual difference between the two wraps? If so, what is it?

2. Is one wrap desired more by players and/or collectors? If so, which one would it be and why?

3. Does one wrap tend to have a higher re-sale value than the other, all other conditions being comparable?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

As far as I remember the rogers red onyx, and Sling red Agate were the same, the tiger pearls were different, and as far as I know exclusive Slingerland, and maybe Leedy, whom Slingerland owned,at that time.No Idea on how long the tiger pearls were offered.

Slingerland didn't offer a red agate ... only the red tiger pearl. The red tiger was a more flat (two dimensional) offering where there was lots of a muted red and just a little bit of black streaks mixed in.

Rogers red onyx is very much a deep three dimensional offering where there is multiple shades of red streaked with black (as if it's on a different level than the reds). It's like looking into a deep j e w e l.

I'm not sure about the authenticity of Slingerland 60's red tiger kits. I think the sellers might be mistaken. They were offered in the early 70's only (as far as I can tell).

Resell ROCKS for the Rogers red onyx kits. They are a very desirable onyx. I've seen shell packs this year move for 1500 to right under the two grand mark. That's a lot of dough for a kit without a snare or hardware package.

Slingerland resell is not that great on most any of their 60's or 70's kits. If you manage to get one, it's just a great kit to enjoy. Even the very very rare wraps go for pretty cheap. WHOOOOO-HOOOOOO!!!!! I love it.

mcjnic:

Thanks for the information.Bowing

It seems a little strange to me that Rogers offered a Red and Blue Onyx (along with Black Onyx) while Slingerland offered a Blue and Grey Agate with a Red Tiger (along with Yellow Tiger & White Tiger).

Is it safe to assume that Rogers' onyx wraps were the equivalents of Slingerland's agate wraps?

The Slingerland tiger pearls were introduced in a flyer in 1968 and conitinued into the early '80s.

They look different than Slingerland's agates which were the same as Rogers' onyxs...except Slingerland didn't do the red.

The red tiger pearl changed in aroind 1970 when the badges went to black and silver. The red had more silver highlights and the black lines were less broad.

Here are my two sets, both from around '72 or 73:

First, let me say that your kits are flat out stunning IMHO.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Secondly, thank you for your input regarding the different wraps and their respective time-frames. I'm considering the purchase of a Slingerland kit that's got the identical wrap as you've got on your kits, the black & silver Slingy badges and the chocolate "milk shake" looking interior shells with reinforcement rings. Included with the kit will be a Ludwig Supraphonic snare in really clean condition.

Would the shells on this particular kit be 3-ply?

Thanks!
