Rogers Red Onyx Cleveland Holiday Kit

Loading...

I just purchased a vintage Rogers Holiday Red Onyx kit from the Cleveland-era in the smaller jazz sizes (20/12/14). The prior owner threw in a Pearl EX Export Series snare drum, original hi-hat stand, throne and cymbal and snare drum stands at a price I simply couldn't refuse. I haven't had a chance to "clean it up" as of yet, but attached a pic of the toms, as purchased.

Over-all, the kit's in pretty nice shape, both functionally and cosmetically. However, the wrap on the bass drum has a rather long meandering crack in it. Because of this, I've got to decide what to do with this particular piece. The way I see it, I've got several choices:

1. Wait for another 20 inch Rogers kick in the matching Red Onyx wrap, which might take some time and sell the current one;

2. See if there's a company that stocks the matching Rogers Red Onyx wrap and have the bass drum re-wrapped;

3. Have the entire kit re-wrapped in the the Red Onyx finish or some other choice; or

4. Have the bass drum re-wrapped in a Blue Onyx finish to create a sort of "patriotic" look for the kit.

I'm hoping to get some feedback regarding the above choices and any others that you might have for the kit.

Also, are Rogers' 14 inch floor toms fairly rare to find in decent condition? I've got two other vintage Rogers kits (Black Diamond Pearl & Champagne Sparkle) and they're both in the 20/12/16 configuration.

As usual, THANKS in advance for your ideas!Help2

Precision drum sells a red onyx wrap that is pretty true to the original. You might want to check that out. Personally, I'd keep the drum red onyx. Also, yes 14" Rogers floor toms are hard to find. They made more drums in the "rock" sizes back then......

Well, lets put it this way...even in this economy...that 14" FT alone, on eFlay, would fetch $600-700.... no problem...

LD is right...Precision's Onyx is a very good match of the Rogers and Slingy originals....so, that option is always there.

IMHO, nix the blue onyx idea...it's a classic kit, save that for a less-classic kit.

A pic of the bass drum wrap damage would be helpful.....

Is the wrap damage in an area that shows much? Missing any pieces? Seen a few with damage on the bottom. Find someone that will reglue the crack if possible (Check with Jack Lawton www.lawtondrum.com). Then wait for another drum or shell to become available. The old Onyx wraps got brittle with age and cracking is common. Don't rewrap unless absolutely and it is not playable condition now. Someone else will want original wrap even with cracking once you locate another shell.

14 is worth the price of admission by itself.

That's a good thought, although honestly you don't have to send it to Jack Lawton nor pay his prices. If it looks like it can be coaxed back together (i.e. the fissure isn't wide) then perhaps some light heat-gunning and some burnishing of the wrap would do it.

I do agree....history buffs, particularly Rogers buffs, would rather see the original wrap with a small open seam/line running through it than a rewrapped bass drum.

But again, always depends upon whether your intent is to sell it as a factory vintage kit, keep it and play it, or just sell it as a cool old kit to someone who cares not about "factory original"....

Exactly. If the existing damage really isn't salvageable aesthetically, I don't care what a vintage junkie may say; you want to rewrap that bass.

Appreciate the input.

You can see by the pics I've attached that the wrap is beyond salvaging.

My concern is that if the wraps offered by Sam Barnard and/or Precision Drum don't match the original wrap on the toms, it's going to be a V-E-R-Y

L-O-N-G time before another Rogers Red Onyx bass drum is offered up for sale.

Any "Plan Bs" would be greatly appreciated!

Ooooof...I agree. It won't be salvageable without being butt-ugly.

Tell ya what, OS...if the Precision wrap doesn't work for you, I will buy it off of you at cost...I use that color quite often and have a buncha Rogers shells stacked up here....

The only issue one sees is that the newly wrapped drum oftentimes looks a bit too cherry, too shiny, too glossy, compared to the originals. But if you can polish up the sheen on the originals, it becomes RRRRREALLY close.

I think you'll find it to be a good match, though....unless the originals have had some noticeable fading....

Hey, Jaye,

Appreciate your input, as usual!

I just received a sample of the Precision Drum Red Onyx and it appears amazingly close to what's on the toms.

There's minimal, if any, fade on either tom.

I might just go ahead and purchase the wrap for the bass drum and see how it works out.
